Player notes
John Marston meets the Strange Man in Hennigan's Stead. The man claims to know John from his time with the Van der Linde gang, yet refuses to explain who he is. He speaks of a friend who needs advice and directs John to Thieves' Landing. John finds the drunk man outside the saloon, preparing to visit a prostitute despite having a wife. He can talk him out of it or give him money to go through with it.
After John reaches Nuevo Paraíso, the Strange Man appears again on the road west of El Matadero. He tells John that Mother Superior Calderón at Las Hermanas faces a dilemma. At the convent, John can give the nun money for her work or rob her. The Strange Man's manner suggests that he already knows which choice John will make.
After the fighting in Mexico has reached its conclusion, John finds the Strange Man for a third time outside Beecher's Hope. The man talks of not knowing his own name, of collecting accounts, and of being damned by many people. John presses him to reveal his identity, but receives no answer.
Angered and confused, John draws his gun and fires at the Strange Man. The bullets have no effect. The man turns away and walks off, leaving John at Beecher's Hope.
Trivia
- ◆After speaking to the man for the second mission, he can be pushed onto the fire.
- ◆Despite the man being unharmed by John shooting at him in the final cutscene, it is still possible to kill him outside of cutscenes by simply shooting at him. This will cause the player to fail the mission and to lose honor.
- ◆When meeting the man for the last time, he will repeatedly say "this is a fine spot" as he stands to look over the ranch. This can be a foreshadow as the spot, in particular, is the final resting place of John Marston.
- ◆The nun who John can either donate to or rob is Mother Superior Calderón, who plays a supportive role in the Undead Nightmare DLC and appears in Saint Denis in Red Dead Redemption 2 in 1899.
- ◆This and Remember My Family are the only stranger missions to take place in all three areas (New Austin, Nuevo Paraíso, then West Elizabeth).
- ◆Obviously due to the missable nature of this mission, this is the only Stranger Mission that cannot be done with Jack Marston.
- ◆If John decides to rob the nun in the second part of the stranger mission, she will carry well over three hundred dollars.
