Ashton is an American loan shark working in Saint Denis, Lemoyne. He deals with Mr. Gillis when Gillis sells him his wife's brooch, a family heirloom. Ashton pays for the piece and then offers Gillis a loan. Gillis refuses, saying he knows the loan shark's reputation. Ashton leaves with the brooch, while Arthur Morgan agrees to recover it for Mary Gillis, who wants to keep it for sentimental reasons.
Arthur pursues Ashton through Saint Denis after he departs. Ashton boards a stagecoach in an attempt to escape, but Arthur follows on horseback and seizes the vehicle. After forcing the coachmen from their seats, Arthur takes the stagecoach to a secluded place and pulls Ashton outside.
Ashton initially offers Arthur $100 for the brooch. Arthur may accept the payment, kill Ashton and search his body, or beat him until he returns the heirloom without payment. If Ashton survives the confrontation, he flees from the area.
