Gilbert Knightly works as an investment banker for the Lemoyne National Bank. He is an American who has recently moved to Saint Denis, in Bayou Nwa, Lemoyne, and he is engaged to an unnamed fiancée. His work places him among the city's banking circles when Mayor Henri Lemieux holds a party.
Knightly attends Mayor Lemieux's party in Saint Denis as a guest. There, he speaks with Hosea Matthews, who draws him into a conversation about the city's bank. Knightly treats Hosea as a fellow guest and does not realize that Hosea is looking for information that can be used against the institution.
Hosea successfully deceives Knightly into sharing information about the Saint Denis bank. Knightly's appearance ends at Mayor Lemieux's party, after Hosea leaves their conversation with details about the bank.
