Gwyn Hughes works as an apprentice undertaker for A.R. Ballard Undertaker in Rhodes, Scarlett Meadows. His work keeps him at the rear of the funeral business, where he makes coffins. Before Arthur Morgan meets him, Gwyn borrows money from Leopold Strauss. The loan leaves the young undertaker owing Strauss, bringing Arthur to Rhodes as part of the gang's debt collection.
Arthur finds Gwyn at the undertaker's building, occupied with a coffin. He tells him that Strauss wants the money back. Gwyn says he has no cash available, but offers another way to settle what he owes. He knows of a brooch buried with Mrs. Claypole in the local cemetery, though he is plainly uneasy about taking jewelry from a grave.
Gwyn asks Arthur to draw attention away from the cemetery so he can dig up Mrs. Claypole's grave without being seen. Once the area is clear, he exhumes the brooch and brings it to Arthur. Arthur accepts the jewelry as payment for Gwyn's debt to Strauss. Gwyn remains in Rhodes, at A.R. Ballard Undertaker.
