The Shaman is a fraudulent spiritualist working for the Roanoke Fuel Company in Butcher Creek, Roanoke Ridge. He poses as a man with supernatural knowledge and persuades the settlement's residents that a curse has fallen on their homes. The company uses him to steer them away from its responsibility for arsenic and lead contamination in the nearby water. With long greying hair and clothes chosen for his false role, he gains the villagers' trust, including that of Obediah Hinton.
When Arthur Morgan asks about the curse, the Shaman directs him to destroy charms hidden in the woods. Once Arthur has done so, the man claims the act has made the curse worse. Arthur calls out the lie and threatens him, but the Shaman insists he possesses a gift before fleeing. Obediah later says that the Shaman has warned everyone away from a mine near Elysian Pool, prompting Arthur to investigate it.
In the mine, Arthur finds poisoned water flowing towards Butcher Creek and takes a sample. A dynamite blast traps him underground, though he escapes through the fumes. Back in the settlement, the Shaman urges the residents to sign a document that he says will end the curse. Obediah starts reading it and exposes its connection to the Roanoke Fuel Company. Arthur identifies the poison as the real cause, forces the Shaman to drink it, and hears him admit that it is lethal before he runs away.
Trivia
- โIt is possible to find the Shaman running around the village screaming after the final cutscene. The player can either kill him or knock him out, although this will cause the village inhabitants to become hostile.
- โDespite the man's persona being an attempt to suggest otherwise, it's highly likely that the Shaman is not Native at all โ for one, Native American tribes did not have shamans, but medicine men. Secondly, his skin and eyes are too clear for someone of Native ancestry, meaning that he is most likely white.
- โIf the player uses photo mode right after collecting the poison, they can see the Shaman standing in the tunnel before the explosion sets off.
