Player notes
The Morgan is an extra small Riding horse in Red Dead Redemption 2, modelled on the real Morgan breed. Its compact frame, refined build and elegant gait distinguish it from larger riding horses. Morgans use Standard handling, with moderate reactivity, but their small size gives them notable agility and maneuverability on confined routes.
Morgans are common horses with low overall attributes. Their health and acceleration are poor, while speed and stamina are average, so they suit shorter travel more than demanding rides. Their agility makes them useful through dense woodland and along narrow mountain paths despite their Standard handling.
Morgan coats can be tamed or stolen in the wilderness, including in Cumberland Forest in New Hanover, around Little Creek River, outside Riggs Station in West Elizabeth and across New Austin. The Bay Roan is sold at stables. During "Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego", the Palomino is available from Amos Levi Blacksmith & Farrier in Valentine. Duncan Geddes owns the unusually large Flaxen Chestnut Morgan, Jeremiah, at Pronghorn Ranch during "Fatherhood, For Beginners".
Trivia
- โOccasionally in Valentine, the player can find Morgans that are larger than usual either in a pen near the stables or being ridden by an NPC dropping off a kill to the Butcher. The player can take these horses for their own, but dying, failing a mission, or leaving the game will reset the size to normal.
- โThe mission "Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego" is the only occurrence in Story Mode where a Morgan is available for purchase at the stables.
- โDespite the compendium description for the Morgan stating that the Bay Roan can be bought from the stables, this is only true in Red Dead Online and cannot be done in Story Mode.
- โWhile the Flaxen Chestnut is a common horse used by NPCs, they were also chosen to be used as placeholder horses late into development. Because many of these placeholders were never changed, this is by far the most ridden horse in the entire game. It also led to some missions having an unusually high number of them, with "Black Belle" in particular having 15+, "The Delights of Van Horn" having 14+, "Advertising, The New American Art" having 11+, "An Honest Day's Labors" having 20+, and "Icarus and Friends" having 27+ Flaxen Chestnut Morgans throughout the entire mission.
- โMorgans are the second shortest horse breed in the game, being just shorter than the Arabian and considerably bigger than the Mule. Like with all horse breeds, their height is a bit shorter but still accurate to the real-world breed at around 14 hands; which would classify them as ponies.
- โThe Bay Morgan has a star and stripe. This horse shares a texture with roans despite not being a roan, leading to the face and neck being differently colored than the rest of the body.
- โThe Palomino Morgan has a stripe and a mane and tail that is not sun-bleached. This horse shares a texture with horses that are supposed to have black points, leading to the legs being darker than the rest of the body and the hooves using the same color as the legs.
- โThe Bay Roan shared a texture with another horse that has socks, leading to subtle brown socks at the bottom of the legs- however, this does not appear to have been intentional.
- โThe Liver Chestnut Morgan shares a texture with a sooty horse with a star and snip, leading to sooty characteristics across the body despite them not really exhibiting on chestnut horses. The coloring is more similar to that of a bay, although the mane and tail would need to ridiculously sun-bleached in order for it to show up this red. For reasons unknown, the socks were colored red despite socks on a horse never being red.
- โThe Flaxen Chestnut has four socks and a star and snip, and shares a texture with a bay horse, leading to the legs being black (although, it could be interpreted as a very dark exhibition of liver chestnut). When cleaned off, the hooves are revealed to be a distinct shade of pink; which would be unrealistic.
