Farming, For Beginners

Tom Dickens is putting up a fence at Pronghorn Ranch when John comes over to help. Tom explains the work, showing John how to drive in a post, set a rail and secure the sections. Once John understands the job, Tom returns to his own duties and leaves him to finish the fence. John spends the rest of the day repairing the line across the ranch in Big Valley.

Later, Tom calls John to the corral, where a ranch hand and Angus, David Geddes's son, are struggling to move a bull. Tom tries to force the animal onward, but the bull breaks loose and bowls Angus and the hand over. John rides after it, catches it with his lasso and settles it down. He leads the bull into the barn, then checks that Angus and the ranch hand are unhurt. Tom and Angus thank him.

The following morning, John joins Abigail and Jack for breakfast. Abigail tells him she has found work at a doctor's office. John leaves the house to begin another day of work at Pronghorn Ranch.
