Fatherhood and Other Dreams

Arthur receives a letter from Mary Linton asking him to meet her in Saint Denis. He finds her at the hotel, where she explains that her father has sunk into gambling and has sold a treasured brooch that belonged to her mother. Arthur initially resists becoming involved with Mr. Gillis again, but agrees to help Mary recover it. They ride to the stables, where Mary goes inside to look for her father while Arthur waits in the street.

Mary returns with Mr. Gillis, who angrily objects to her interference before walking away. Arthur and Mary shadow him through Saint Denis. They watch him sell the brooch to a loan shark, Ashton, then refuse Ashton's offer of another loan. Mary confronts her father over what he has done, while Ashton takes the brooch away in his coach. Arthur sets off after him as the coach leaves the city.

Arthur catches Ashton's coach on the road through Bayou Nwa, climbs aboard and takes control after throwing the driver down. He drives into the swampland outside Saint Denis and forces Ashton to hand over the brooch. With Mary's family heirloom recovered, Arthur returns to Saint Denis and finds her waiting. She tells him that Mr. Gillis has disappeared again, and declines Arthur's offer to search for him.

Arthur gives Mary the brooch, and they walk towards the trolley station. Mary may ask him to join her at the theatre, where they watch the evening's acts before continuing to the station. If he refuses, they go there directly. At the trolley station, Mary asks Arthur to leave with her. He admits that he wants to, but says the gang still needs him, promising to come once he has settled his business.
