Mary Linton

Mary Gillis grows up in a troubled family and falls in love with Arthur Morgan. They become engaged, but Arthur's place in the Van der Linde gang and her family's disapproval end the relationship. Mary later marries Barry Linton, who dies of pneumonia. Her father, Mr. Gillis, descends into drink, gambling and debt, while her brother Jamie joins the Chelonians. Widowed and unable to manage her family alone, Mary takes the surname Linton and turns again to Arthur.

At Horseshoe Overlook, Mary writes to Arthur after years apart and asks him to save Jamie from the Chelonians. Though wary of the Gillis family, Arthur agrees to find Jamie. He pursues him and persuades him to leave the cult, then brings him to Mary at Valentine station. She thanks Arthur and leaves by train with Jamie. Arthur is left aware that his feelings for Mary still make it hard for him to refuse her.

In Saint Denis, Mary asks Arthur to help with her father. Mr. Gillis insults her before leaving, and Arthur and Mary follow him into an alley, where they find him selling a brooch that Mary's mother gave her. Mary confronts her father while Arthur recovers the brooch from Ashton. Afterwards, Mary asks Arthur to attend the theater with her. They share an evening together, but Arthur cannot leave the gang despite promising that he may yet escape with her.

At Beaver Hollow, Mary sends Arthur his old engagement ring and a farewell letter. She tells him that he did not come for her after the robbery as promised, and that they must let each other go. Arthur later gives the ring to John Marston, who uses it to propose to Abigail Roberts. After Arthur dies, Mary visits his grave and weeps.
