At Horseshoe Overlook, Susan Grimshaw tells Arthur Morgan that Mary Linton has sent him a letter from Valentine. One of the camp women collected it, having been recognised by Mary, who learned that the gang was staying near town. Arthur is surprised that Mary has contacted him after so long. He takes the letter to his tent, reads it, and sits with his thoughts before leaving camp for Chadwick Farm.
Arthur reaches the farm near Valentine and knocks at the house. An older woman answers with a gun trained on him. Once Arthur explains that he has come for Mary, she goes inside to tell her. Mary meets Arthur outside, and their reunion is strained by the years since they parted. She asks him to help her brother Jamie, who has gone into Cumberland Forest with the Chelonians.
Mary fears the Chelonians have drawn Jamie into something dangerous and may get him killed. Arthur listens as she asks for his help despite their history. He can agree to find Jamie, or refuse Mary and leave her at Chadwick Farm. The meeting ends in Valentine.
Trivia
- โIf Arthur has not completed "Money Lending and Other Sins III" before this mission, an alternate cutscene will play out where Leopold Strauss pleads to Arthur to collect the debts from Thomas Downes. This will force "Money Lending and Other Sins III" to start immediately. However, there is a way to start it without completing Leopold's mission, where one must complete other missions, complete "Money Lending and Other Sins II" last, then examine the letter, which will trigger the mission icon.
- โWhen Arthur visits Mary in Valentine, there are two bits of foreshadowing quotes that Arthur will remember in "A Fork in the Road" depending on his Honor. The first is when he is reluctant to listen to her story and she says, "Don't make me beg you, Arthur" (if his Honor is low); and the second is when she asks him to find her brother, saying, "I understand if you don't wanna help me, but... but... I think of you often" (if Arthur's Honor is high).
- โThere is a slight difference in cutscenes, where it depends on whether Arthur is wearing a hat or not. If he is, he will take it off and hold it and puts it back on after the meeting. If he is not, it will not affect anything else.
- โIf the player doesn't make a choice and the timer runs out, Mary will angrily storm inside saying Arthur hasn't changed much. This will lock the player out of the third part of the mission.
