À Horseshoe Overlook, Susan Grimshaw dit à Arthur Morgan que Mary Linton lui a envoyé une lettre depuis Valentine. L'une des femmes du camp l'a récupérée, Mary l'ayant reconnue et ayant appris que le gang séjournait près de la ville. Arthur est surpris que Mary ait repris contact après tout ce temps. Il emporte la lettre dans sa tente, la lit, puis reste seul avec ses pensées avant de quitter le camp pour Chadwick Farm.
Arthur arrive à la ferme près de Valentine et frappe à la porte de la maison. Une femme âgée lui ouvre, une arme pointée sur lui. Quand Arthur explique qu'il est venu pour Mary, elle rentre lui annoncer sa présence. Mary rejoint Arthur dehors, et leurs retrouvailles sont tendues par les années qui ont passé depuis leur séparation. Elle lui demande d'aider son frère Jamie, parti dans Cumberland Forest avec les Chelonians.
Mary craint que les Chelonians aient entraîné Jamie dans quelque chose de dangereux et qu'ils puissent le faire tuer. Arthur l'écoute lui demander son aide malgré leur passé. Il peut accepter de retrouver Jamie, ou refuser Mary et la laisser à Chadwick Farm. La rencontre se termine à Valentine.
Anecdotes
- ◆If Arthur has not completed "Money Lending and Other Sins III" before this mission, an alternate cutscene will play out where Leopold Strauss pleads to Arthur to collect the debts from Thomas Downes. This will force "Money Lending and Other Sins III" to start immediately. However, there is a way to start it without completing Leopold's mission, where one must complete other missions, complete "Money Lending and Other Sins II" last, then examine the letter, which will trigger the mission icon.
- ◆When Arthur visits Mary in Valentine, there are two bits of foreshadowing quotes that Arthur will remember in "A Fork in the Road" depending on his Honor. The first is when he is reluctant to listen to her story and she says, "Don't make me beg you, Arthur" (if his Honor is low); and the second is when she asks him to find her brother, saying, "I understand if you don't wanna help me, but... but... I think of you often" (if Arthur's Honor is high).
- ◆There is a slight difference in cutscenes, where it depends on whether Arthur is wearing a hat or not. If he is, he will take it off and hold it and puts it back on after the meeting. If he is not, it will not affect anything else.
- ◆If the player doesn't make a choice and the timer runs out, Mary will angrily storm inside saying Arthur hasn't changed much. This will lock the player out of the third part of the mission.
