Hunting (Charles Smith)

Charles asks Arthur Morgan to ride out with him from camp and hunt bison in The Heartlands. They mount up and travel into the plains, where Charles leads Arthur to a herd. Arthur brings down a bison and skins the animal, taking its pelt before the two men continue through the valley. The outing is interrupted when they come across bison carcasses left behind by someone who has killed them without using the meat or hides.

Charles is angered by the waste and follows the poachers' trail with Arthur. They reach an abandoned campsite, inspect it, then ride on to the poachers' camp. Charles confronts the two men there. When one poacher becomes threatening, Charles fires his Sawed-Off Shotgun and kills him. The other man is left frightened and at Arthur's mercy.

Arthur questions the surviving poacher, who admits that the men slaughtered the bison to make the killings appear to be the work of Indians. Arthur can execute him or let him leave. Charles rides away after the confrontation. Arthur remains at the camp in The Heartlands and searches it, finding a Poison Throwing Knife Pamphlet among the poachers' belongings.
