Player notes

Arthur meets Hosea Matthews at Emerald Ranch, where Hosea is speaking with Seamus, a fence who may become their business partner. Seamus doubts that the pair know their trade, so Hosea offers proof. Seamus directs them to Carmody Dell, where his cousin-in-law, Old Bob Crawford, keeps a stagecoach that Seamus wants returned to him. He also tells them that money can be found in the Crawford home, but insists that nobody be killed.

Arthur rides with Hosea through the Heartlands to Carmody Dell. Near the property, they leave their horses and study the house through binoculars before choosing whether to move in by day or after dark. During the day, Hosea approaches Bob Crawford and Bob Crawford Jr. under the guise of treating the older man's back, giving Arthur a chance to enter the house and take its valuables without being seen. At night, the Crawfords sleep while Arthur searches the house, and he can wake Old Bob to force him to reveal more money.

After the robbery, Arthur heads for the barn during the day and waits for Hosea to join him in the stagecoach. At night, Hosea brings the coach around to the front of the house for Arthur. They drive the stolen vehicle back across the Heartlands to Emerald Ranch and put it inside Seamus's barn. Seamus accepts the coach, and Arthur and Hosea have established that he can deal with them.

Trivia

  • โ—†If the player skips the opening cutscene then the audio may glitch and can be heard during gameplay.
  • โ—†If followed after the cutscene, Seamus will be smoking at his Fence.
  • โ—†The player can ignore Hosea when asked to scope out Carmody Dell and head for the house directly, without failing the mission.
  • โ—†If the player chooses to rob the house at night, there is a hidden stash box under Bob Crawford's bed containing $150, making the total amount almost $400. It is only available if the player decides to threaten Crawford. However, he will only reveal the stash under the bed if Arthur has already stolen the rest of the money throughout the house, otherwise he will say that its in his bedroom chest, sons dresser or another missed location, and the money will be there instead.
  • โ—†If Bob Crawford Sr. is hogtied during the robbery he will express his suspicions about Seamus by asking Arthur "Did someone put you to this?"
  • โ—†If hogtied, both of the Crawfords can be picked up but they can't be stowed on the horse.
  • โ—†The player can kill the Crawfords during the mission, but it will result in a loss of honor. It will also alert a witness whether the approach was during the day or night and Hosea will command the player to stop them from reporting to the law. The same applies in "Advertising, The New American Art".
  • โ—†The player does not have to rob the house to complete the mission. Instead, they can head straight to the barn and get on the stagecoach which will result in change of the mission objective from "Sneak Up to Carmody Dell" to "Wait for Hosea to get on the Stagecoach" to "Return the stagecoach to Emerald Ranch".
  • โ—†Hosea will also express his disappointment by saying "Fine, forget the house then. Let's just take the coach and get out of here".
  • โ—†If the player does not loot the house during the day approach and watches Hosea doing his spinal treatment before heading into the barn with the stagecoach, he will be disappointed.
  • โ—†If the player silently kills the Crawfords during the night approach, it will not alert a witness and Hosea will react to it.
  • โ—†If the player kills the Crawfords during the day approach when Hosea introduces himself to them, he will react to it and it will alert a witness.
  • โ—†If the Crawfords spotted the player when the treatment is done during the day approach, they will attack the player and Hosea. If the player kills them when being caught, Hosea will scold them for not staying hidden. If the player does not kill them, they will kill Hosea resulting in mission failure.
  • โ—†If the player stays inside the house after the treatment is finished, they can hear the Crawfords discuss the massage and Hosea after entering the house.
  • โ—†Immediately after the mission, all Fences will be temporarily unavailable. However, the player can still deliver stolen wagons to Seamus.
  • โ—†After the mission, when visited for the first time Seamus will comment on the robbery.
  • โ—†If the player visits Valentine after the mission, some people may talk about how Old Bob Crawford was robbed.
  • โ—†The Barber will mention that someone robbed a stagecoach from old Bob Crawford at Carmody Dell and that he would have felt sorry if he hadn't robbed it first.
  • โ—†The Gunsmith will comment that Old Crawford at Carmody Dell had a wagon stolen from his barn and will express his suspicions that the coach may have been stolen from Crawford himself prior to the home robbery.
  • โ—†If the player returns to Carmody Dell after the mission, Bob Crawford Sr. will tell Arthur to leave his property and he will sometimes carry a Carbine Repeater or Cattleman Revolver to threaten them to leave. Also, a dog will appear and will bark to alert Crawford that someone is on the property.
  • โ—†The Carbine Repeater that can be found in the bedroom will be absent during and after the mission if the player returns to the homestead.
  • โ—†For a gold medal, this mission is best done at night, as you can simply get out of the house through the front door, get in the stagecoach, then hightail toward Emerald Ranch to deliver it. During the day, you have to take care not to be spotted when leaving with the coach, which takes considerably more time.
  • โ—†If done at night, it is easy to first go to the livestock and lasso-kill them for hides without drawing any attention. There is one bull and plenty of cows to choose from.
  • โ—†In the Beta version of this mission, according to cut voice lines that still remain in the game files, the player initially had the ability to threaten Bob Crawford Jr. in his bed during the night approach just like his father, and Arthur would ask Junior where the money was hidden, but he would say that only his father knows about the hidden money's location. This was cut due to its ruthlessness.
