O tênis fica disponível depois de "Complications". Michael De Santa e Trevor Philips são os únicos protagonistas que podem participar, sozinhos contra um adversário local ou durante um encontro ou atividade com amigos. Amanda De Santa, Jimmy De Santa, Michael e Trevor podem entrar nas partidas entre conhecidos quando estão disponíveis, enquanto Donato, Norman e Rae aparecem como adversários controlados pelo jogo. A atividade pode começar na quadra da mansão de Michael, embora ela fique indisponível durante parte da história entre "Did Somebody Say Yoga?" e "Reuniting the Family".
As partidas também acontecem no Chumash Hotel Courts, na Great Ocean Highway, no Richman Hotel Courts, na West Eclipse Boulevard, no USLA Campus Courts, na Picture Perfect Drive, no Vespucci Apartments Courts, na Palomino Avenue, no Vespucci Courts em Vespucci Beach, no Vinewood Apartments Courts, na Elgin Avenue, e no Weazel Courts, na Dorset Drive. Antes do início, Michael ou Trevor escolhe a duração e a dificuldade. O tênis está disponível a qualquer hora, e o relógio do jogo para durante a partida.
A partida segue a pontuação do tênis, com pontos formando games e games formando sets. Michael ou Trevor saca, devolve a bola e usa golpes diferentes, como lob, topspin e backspin, para mandá-la ao outro lado da quadra. A sessão termina na quadra quando o game ou set escolhido é vencido. Jogar também aumenta a Força do protagonista, melhorando seu desempenho no tênis.
Curiosidades
- ◆It is possible for Trevor to play tennis on Michael's private court without Michael by climbing the western wall of his property and jumping the court fence. When the match is started, he will be playing against Amanda. Trevor and Amanda will share amusing banter throughout the match that reflects their antipathetic feelings toward each other.
- ◆Due to a rare glitch, if the player battles Trevor in a tennis match as Michael, Trevor will sometimes be holding a gun attached to the racket. This can also happen to Michael if playing as Trevor. The glitch is most likely caused by making both protagonists draw their weapons and starting a game before they can holster their weapon, leaving the weapon still in their hands.
- ◆If playing against either Michael, Trevor or Amanda, they (as opponents) share the same win-pose animations as any other computer opponent in the game. This is most likely due to the opponent becoming an NPC and all opponents have the same winning animations, same goes to both Michael and Trevor. If challenged either Michael or Trevor, they technically become an NPC. The protagonist the player controls at the time has unique animations (Michael being proud of himself and Trevor somewhat amusingly hostile).
- ◆Tennis is the only side-mission required for the 100% of GTA V that cannot be played as Franklin.
