Tennis devient disponible après "Complications". Michael De Santa et Trevor Philips sont les seuls protagonistes pouvant y participer, soit seuls contre un adversaire local, soit lors d'un rendez-vous ou d'une sortie. Amanda De Santa, Jimmy De Santa, Michael et Trevor peuvent rejoindre des parties entre amis lorsqu'elles sont disponibles, tandis que Donato, Norman et Rae apparaissent comme adversaires contrôlés par l'ordinateur. L'activité peut débuter sur le terrain du manoir de Michael, bien qu'elle soit indisponible pendant une partie de l'histoire entre "Did Somebody Say Yoga?" et "Reuniting the Family".
Un match peut également se dérouler à Chumash Hotel Courts sur Great Ocean Highway, Richman Hotel Courts sur West Eclipse Boulevard, USLA Campus Courts sur Picture Perfect Drive, Vespucci Apartments Courts sur Palomino Avenue, Vespucci Courts à Vespucci Beach, Vinewood Apartments Courts sur Elgin Avenue, ou Weazel Courts sur Dorset Drive. Michael et Trevor choisissent la durée du match et la difficulté avant le début de la partie. Tennis reste disponible à toute heure, et l'horloge du jeu s'arrête pendant le match.
Le match suit le système de score du tennis, les points déterminant les jeux et les jeux déterminant les sets. Michael ou Trevor sert, retourne la balle et utilise des frappes variées, dont des lobs, des topspins et des backspins, pour la placer de l'autre côté du terrain. Remporter le jeu ou le set sélectionné met fin à la session sur le terrain. Jouer augmente également la Force du protagoniste, ce qui améliore ses capacités au tennis.
Anecdotes
- ◆It is possible for Trevor to play tennis on Michael's private court without Michael by climbing the western wall of his property and jumping the court fence. When the match is started, he will be playing against Amanda. Trevor and Amanda will share amusing banter throughout the match that reflects their antipathetic feelings toward each other.
- ◆Due to a rare glitch, if the player battles Trevor in a tennis match as Michael, Trevor will sometimes be holding a gun attached to the racket. This can also happen to Michael if playing as Trevor. The glitch is most likely caused by making both protagonists draw their weapons and starting a game before they can holster their weapon, leaving the weapon still in their hands.
- ◆If playing against either Michael, Trevor or Amanda, they (as opponents) share the same win-pose animations as any other computer opponent in the game. This is most likely due to the opponent becoming an NPC and all opponents have the same winning animations, same goes to both Michael and Trevor. If challenged either Michael or Trevor, they technically become an NPC. The protagonist the player controls at the time has unique animations (Michael being proud of himself and Trevor somewhat amusingly hostile).
- ◆Tennis is the only side-mission required for the 100% of GTA V that cannot be played as Franklin.
