Player notes

At Darnell Bros. in La Mesa, Michael De Santa meets Franklin Clinton and the hired crew for the final briefing on the Vangelico robbery. The chosen plan determines their entry. For the smart approach, Michael drops Franklin at a nearby building site while the crew parks a Bugstars van outside Vangelico in Rockford Hills. Franklin crosses the rooftops and releases BZ gas through the store's ventilation system. As everyone inside collapses, Michael, the driver and the gunman enter the shop while Franklin collects the getaway bikes.

For the loud approach, Franklin drives Michael and the crew to Vangelico in a van. Wearing helmets, Michael, the driver and the gunman force the customers to the floor and begin emptying the display cases while Franklin waits outside with the bikes. The gunman keeps the hostages under control, though an inexperienced one leaves Michael to deal with the store manager. In either plan, the crew grabs the jewelry before the alarm brings the police, then Michael gets out as Franklin leads the driver and gunman away on motorcycles.

Franklin follows the crew through Los Santos and into a tunnel leading to the sewers. A poorly chosen gunman can crash before reaching the tunnel, leaving behind part of the haul. The riders emerge at the Los Santos River, where police cars block their route. The viewpoint switches to Michael, who arrives in the delivery truck with the hacker and forces the police vehicles aside. Once the pursuit ends, the crew loads the bikes into the truck and drives to Lester's lockup in La Mesa, where they split up.

Trivia

  • โ—†The mission first appeared in a scene in the first trailer. It was later depicted in an artwork piece almost a year later. It was also the first confirmed mission of GTA V.
  • โ—†Also, in the artwork of LS Storm Drain, while hard to see, there's a Bravado Police Cruiser and a Vapid Police Cruiser, which was later replaced by the Interceptor.
  • โ—†In the version of the mission seen in the first trailer, Michael is seen completing the job with Gustavo Mota, Eddie Toh, and another unknown crew member. It is possible that this crew member is meant to represent Packie due to their similar hairstyles.
  • โ—†This, as well as a piece of artwork inside Darnell Bros. showing four crew members' wrap sheets on the planning board, suggests the mission would originally have four crew members.
  • โ—†Also, the crew uses the smart approach equipment: the Bugstars van, uniform, and gas masks.
  • โ—†In the same trailer, the gas masks were yellow and covered only the mouth.
  • โ—†Also in the beta, balaclavas were used in the loud approach, but motorbike helmets were used in the final version.
  • โ—†This mission was going to be named "Pest Control" in the beta, which is also the name of a mission in GTA IV.
  • โ—†The mission, especially the loud method, seems to be loosely inspired in the opening scene of the 1987 film Beverly Hills Cop 2, where a crew of robbers hold a jewelry store, doing the same motions as breaking the glass panels and being timed to pick up the jewels.
  • โ—†The escape route seems to be loosely based on the 2003 film The Italian Job, as the crew escape through the sewers in Mini Coopers, chased by bikers and exiting through the flood control.
  • โ—†The use of BZ gas and the pest control van could be used in reference to an episode of NCIS (TV Series), " ", where the gas was used in a more lethal manner, and pest control vans were mentioned in conjunction during a newscast.
  • โ—†New copies are sold with GTA V promotional cards, with an image of the mission occurring.
  • โ—†The screenshot on the Rockstar Games Social Club shows Michael wearing his default gray suit with gloves and a balaclava for the loud option.
  • โ—†On the corkboard in the gameplay trailer, a to-do list showed three out of the five tasks were complete, those completed tasks being: evaluating the security, photographing the interior and deciding the approach for the heist.
  • โ—†Lester mentions the as a possible contact they could use for the heist, but ultimately decides against it due to their unpredictable nature making them a bad fit for the operation.
  • โ—†It takes, at minimum, six seconds longer to clear the jewel cases in the loud approach compared to the smart approach, because of the manager's attempt at heroism.
  • โ—†Killing any hostages with a skilled gunman will cause the gunman to berate Michael for killing the hostages. This will not fail the mission, however.
  • โ—†If Michael stays in the store after the timer runs out, a unique cutscene will play, where the police arrive and arrest the crew members. Michael is seen getting handcuffed and at the end escorted to a police vehicle. This will also fail the mission.
  • โ—†The traffic warden cannot be shot and killed, as he reappears in the first cutscene of Mr. Philips. However, he can be killed if the player runs him over.
  • โ—†If Norm and Karim are chosen as part of the crew, after Norm crashes into the entrance of the tunnel, Karim will stop halfway into the underground route trying to get his bearings.
  • โ—†If Eddie Toh is chosen as the driver, he will call the Sanchez "the best bikes for the terrain" in the tunnel. This is correct, as the Sanchez and its livery variation can easily handle off-road terrain.
  • โ—†If Karim Denz is chosen as the driver, the Bati 801RR used for the getaway features a unique engine sound. Selecting him is one of the very few ways to get a Bati 801RR in story mode, especially in the enhanced version (Xbox One, PS4, and PC), due to it being absent from traffic.
  • โ—†Moreover, in the original version (Xbox 360 and PS3), replaying this mission and selecting Karim Denz as the driver would slightly improve the probability of the Bati 801RR spawning in traffic.
  • โ—†If the loud approach is chosen, Michael's Carbine Rifle will retain approximately 2,000 cartridges after the mission. If the smart approach is chosen, Michael's Assault Rifle will retain approximately the same amount. The extra ammo for both will disappear after the mission Three's Company is completed.
  • โ—†This is one of the few missions where it is impossible to win a bronze medal, since the Protege Protected objective must be completed or the mission fails.
  • โ—†This mission is one of the few missions other than the assassination missions that affects the stock market. As soon as the mission is finished, Vangelico stock falls, but it rebounds after Minor Turbulence.
  • โ—†If Franklin has grenades, Michael will notice the grenades and warn Franklin just before he reaches the vantage point not to throw a grenade by mistake.
  • โ—†Michael and his team are with the Bugstars Burrito, unlike in the loud approach, where they are seen with a different black Burrito.
  • โ—†After loading the motorcycles into the Benson, the radio will be set to Radio Mirror Park. One of the following three songs may be playing: "Little White Lie" by Living Days, "Shooting Holes" by Twin Shadow or "Boogie in Zero Gravity" by Black Strobe.
  • โ—†If The Big Con with Bugstar disguise approach is chosen during The Diamond Casino Heist, Lester will mention that he's "done something similar to this before, a jewel store", confirming that the smart approach is the canon choice for this mission.
