Leigh Johnson is the District Marshal of Armadillo in New Austin, a post he takes around 1897 despite having had no early interest in police work. He is married to Priscilla Johnson until her death in 1903. Johnson leads the town's sheriff's office and its deputies, Jonah and Eli, while pursuing outlaws across Cholla Springs. By 1911, years of violence, public suspicion and pressure from the Southwestern Railroad Company have made him increasingly cynical. He remains a direct, disciplined lawman who fights beside his deputies when necessary.

John Marston meets Johnson at the Armadillo office while seeking Bill Williamson. Johnson offers assistance if John helps restore order in the district. They pursue Walton Lowe to Pleasance House, where John brings down the gang leader and Johnson either arrests him or takes his body back to town. Johnson then rides with John, Jonah and Eli into Pike's Basin, where they defeat the Bollard Twins' cattle rustlers and recover the stolen herd for the local ranchers.

After Bill Williamson's gang attacks Ridgewood Farm, Johnson takes John and two deputies to investigate. They find the farm littered with victims and fight the gang members holding its residents under attack. The group follows the surviving outlaws to Bill, but he escapes after sending more men against them. Johnson and his party capture Norman Deek, Bill's lieutenant, and return him to the Armadillo jail. When the gang abducts Bonnie MacFarlane and demands Deek at Tumbleweed, Johnson takes John, Jonah and Eli to make the exchange.

The meeting at Tumbleweed is a trap. Bonnie is left hanging and John saves her, while Deek is killed by his own gang. Johnson helps clear the town, then brings Bonnie back to Armadillo. Later, he and his deputies join John, Seth Briars and Nigel West Dickens in the assault on Fort Mercer. They discover that Bill has already crossed into Nuevo Paraรญso with Javier Escuella's help. Johnson and John part after the assault. In 1914, Johnson resigns after seventeen years as marshal; his leaving party at the Armadillo Saloon ends with him making three arrests and standing alone in the saloon.

Trivia

  • โ—†Johnson is marked by inconsistencies regarding his role as a lawman. Despite being identified with a Federal Marshal badge, Johnson claims that Bill Williamson is outside his jurisdiction which contradicts the typical nationwide authority of U.S. Marshals. Johnson also complains of the interference of the federal government despite supposedly being a part of it. A newspaper clipping in 1914 identifies him as a town marshal rather than a federal one, which would limit his jurisdiction to just Armadillo. However, Johnson frequently leads operations far beyond the town, such as Pike's Basin, Tumbleweed, and Fort Mercer. If Johnson, like his badge signifies, is a U.S. Marshal, it would make little sense how he frequently complains about federal interference, since it would mean heโ€™s a federal himself.
  • โ—†Due to the apparent lack of a proper sheriff of Armadillo in 1911, Johnson may have taken up additional responsibilities to better ensure law enforcement in Cholla Springs and by extension, Armadillo. His ventures into Gaptooth Ridge and Rรญo Bravo, despite lacking formal jurisdiction, could be attributed to the critical lack of local law enforcement in those areas.
  • โ—†In Red Dead Redemption 2, Sheriff Palmer is seen in charge of Armadillo. He was either killed by the Del Lobo Gang, or resigned. It is briefly mentioned that Marshal Johnson's absence is due to the cholera outbreak.
  • โ—†His outfit is similar to the one worn by Sheriff O'Grady from Red Dead Revolver.
  • โ—†Despite carrying a pair of revolvers, in gameplay, Johnson will only wield one of these revolvers, dual-wielding them only in cutscenes.
  • โ—†NPCs at MacFarlane's Ranch can be heard stating that "he has the whole world on his shoulders".
  • โ—†Johnson is a widower. The tombstone of his late wife, Priscilla Johnson, is located in the Coot's Chapel Cemetery, to the left of the front entrance. The grave reveals that she died April 23rd, 1903. The cause of death, however, is not mentioned. The tombstone also reads, 'Forever Smiling In Our Hearts'.
  • โ—†As seen in "Political Realities in Armadillo", the Marshal uses a Tersk as his mount. However, during "The Assault on Fort Mercer," he is seen dismounting a Kentucky Saddler.
  • โ—†Bonnie MacFarlane, along with Marshal Johnson, can be killed after the mission "Hanging Bonnie MacFarlane". Immediately after the mission, as Marston watches them ride off, if he goes into Dead Eye Mode and kills their horses, Bonnie and the Marshal will fall off.
  • โ—†In the DLC Liars and Cheats, one of the Grand Prix race courses is named after him: L. Johnson's Run, which starts and ends in Armadillo.
  • โ—†In a promotional picture that can be seen below in the gallery, the Marshal is pictured crumbling a bounty in his hand. If the player looks closely, they can see the bounty target's hideout, Campo Mirada.
  • โ—†After his mission in Undead Nightmare and John leaves his office, he can be seen making calls and doing paperwork.

  • โ—†In Red Dead Online, Bonnie MacFarlane mentions to players about Leigh Johnson when beginning a recovery mission for her as she mentions that she is hoping that he can come back due to the fact he is away from the cholera outbreak.
  • โ—†Marshal Johnson's gun belt has 2 gun holsters. This is something he has in common with an outlaw, oddly enough. That outlaw is Norman Deek, of the Williamson gang.
  • โ—†Leigh Johnson appears to be a very despised person in Armadillo, as numerous citizens, shopkeepers and even lawmen in Armadillo, like Mel Thaxton, will often complain about him and badmouth him. An example of this is also shown at the end of "Justice in Pike's Basin", whereupon saving the town from the nearby cattle rustling gang, people were more concerned about Nigel West Dickens missing.
  • โ—†Baxter Deaton in Armadillo is notable to be heard talking badly about Johnson, such as how he "buried stolen goods out in Rio Del Lobo" and how "the gang over by Twin Rocks are in cahoots with him". He even talks about Johnson beating the local women. Coincidentally or not, Rio Del Lobo is where the second treasure for the Treasure hunting challenges is located.
  • โ—†Jeb Murphy will claim that Johnson was never a man in his eyes and that he never liked him.
  • โ—†Eldin Grubb might describe Johnson as a terrible lawman and person in general.
  • โ—†Mel Thaxton will often blame Marshal Johnson for the position he is in at Armadillo.
  • โ—†Herbert Moon will proclaim Marshal to be useless when witnessing a crime.
  • โ—†Jake has dialogue where he says that Marshal Johnson is not the same man he used to be.
