Player notes

Bonnie MacFarlane is Drew MacFarlane's daughter and a rancher at MacFarlane's Ranch in Hennigan's Stead, New Austin. Raised among six brothers, she loses five to sickness or accidents while Patrick leaves for New York, so she takes on the work expected of the family's son. She spends her life helping Drew run the ranch and remains unmarried, dismissing her suitors as unsuitable. As violence, debt, rail competition and Drew's failing health threaten the property, she patrols its land at night.

In 1898, Bonnie meets the Red Dead Online protagonist on the porch of the ranch house. She first takes them for a robber, then learns they are seeking work. Bonnie explains that she and Drew intend to leave temporarily because of the outbreak in Armadillo, until Amos reports that a ranch wagon has disappeared. She sends the protagonist after it and pays for its return. Later, she continues to offer work from MacFarlane's Ranch, including recovery, delivery, escort and hunting jobs.

In 1911, Bonnie is on the train from Blackwater when John Marston arrives in New Austin. After Bill Williamson's men shoot and abandon John near Fort Mercer, she finds him on the road, pays Dr. Thomas $15 for his care and lets him recover at the ranch in exchange for work. John helps her with ranch duties, then rescues the horses when Williamson's gang burns the barn. The gang later kidnaps Bonnie to trade her for Norman Deek. At Tumbleweed, the exchange becomes an ambush and the gang tries to hang her, but John and Marshal Leigh Johnson kill the attackers and save her.

After Dutch van der Linde dies, John returns with Jack to buy cattle from Bonnie. She rides with them as they drive the herd from MacFarlane's Ranch toward Beecher's Hope. When pests destroy crops, she telegraphs John for corn. John and Abigail bring it to the ranch, where Bonnie and Abigail speak amicably before the Marstons depart. Bonnie watches their wagon leave, then follows Amos into the general store. In 1914, the ranch remains open and Jack is still welcome there, though Bonnie is not seen.

Trivia

  • โ—†Bonnie shares a few similarities to Annie Stoakes from the previous game Red Dead Revolver: both are ranchers with blonde hair and similar outfits, both become allies to the main protagonist and they both face similar threats during the games.
  • โ—†Bonnie's age is discussed in the first issue of the Blackwater Ledger after the mission to free Bonnie from the hanging noose. The article, found in the lower left hand corner, suggests her kidnapping was a crime of passion perpetuated by the Bill Williamson gang and goes on to describe Bonnie as "a spinster of 29 years". This contradicts Bonnie's own statement in "This is Armadillo, USA" that she is 27, as well as the Red Dead Redemption GOTY Guidebook, which also lists her as being 27. This may be an oversight on Rockstar's part, though it's also plausibly an in-story misreporting.
  • โ—†Another inconsistency regarding her age can be found in the epilogue of Red Dead Redemption 2, where the Ranch's barn has yet to be constructed. In the first game, Bonnie tells John that it was constructed when she was a little girl; the epilogue of Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in 1907, when Bonnie would be 23 years old.
  • โ—†Bonnie's appearance in Red Dead Online can also be seen as an inconsistency with her age: although the game take place in 1898, when she would be 14 years old, she looks to be in her early 20s.
  • โ—†Bonnie MacFarlane is named after the aunt of former Rockstar San Diego designer Rob Hanson. He renamed the ranch he designed "MacFarlane's Ranch" and named the rancher's daughter Bonnie MacFarlane just before he resigned.
  • โ—†Bonnie appears on the back of the fold-out map provided with the game.
  • โ—†Her outfit used to be able to be bought and worn within PlayStation Home.
  • โ—†In the Undead Nightmare DLC, a graffito will appear on a wall in Blackwater reads "You do so love to talk in riddles". This quotes Bonnie's statement to John. Another quote from Bonnie found scrawled on the walls of Blackwater is "Civilization is truly a beautiful thing".
  • โ—†She was #29 on Game Informer 's The 30 Characters Who Defined a Decade.
  • โ—†On close examination, it can be seen that she wears two belts like most male characters: a regular belt and a gunbelt.
  • โ—†John only calls her 'Bonnie' twice in the game; the rest of the time, he refers to her as 'Miss MacFarlane'.
  • โ—†She can be seen wielding a Winchester Repeater in artwork, but in the actual game, she never had one.
  • โ—†Bonnie appears to wear a Native American themed necklace.
  • โ—†For the scene where she appears on the train in the beginning of Red Dead Redemption, her motion-capture was executed by Steve J. Palmer.
  • โ—†Bonnie is the only character in Red Dead Redemption whom John willingly opens up to about his past outlaw life.
