Player notes
John Marston goes to MacFarlane's Ranch to meet Bonnie MacFarlane. There he is introduced to her father, Drew MacFarlane, who joins them in breaking wild horses for the ranch. Bonnie gives John a lasso and leads him and Drew out into New Austin. They find a wild horse, and John rides close enough to rope it while Bonnie and Drew hold it between them. John mounts the animal and breaks it.
Drew takes the first horse away after it is tamed. John and Bonnie catch a second wild horse, and John breaks that one as well. Bonnie rides the newly tamed horse back to MacFarlane's Ranch with John. From the ranch, Bonnie takes him toward Cholla Springs, where a larger herd of wild horses is running near Armadillo.
John drives the herd into a canyon, but a Kentucky Saddler separates from the other horses. He pursues the stallion alone, ropes it and climbs onto its back. After breaking the Kentucky Saddler, John rides it to Bonnie in Cholla Springs.

Trivia
- โThe achievements/trophies Clemency Pays and Dastardly cannot be completed until this mission is completed, as the player only unlocks the lasso after this mission, and the lasso must be unlocked for getting these achievements/trophies. There are also some random encounters that will not spawn, and bounties cannot be turned in alive.
- โIt is impossible to lasso the horses that you are herding until you've brought them to Bonnie and everyone else.
- โAlthough Bonnie says to drive the herd up to the canyon you only need to herd the Kentucky Saddler to the canyon.
- โIf you herd the horses up to the side of the canyon it will sometimes think you have herded them into the canyon and you will have completed this part of the mission.
- โIt is unnecessary to hitch the Saddler, as completing this mission will automatically overwrite and despawn Marston's primary horse. This can be particularly problematic in Hardcore mode, as it forces Marston to lose the War Horse thus requiring the $10,000 deed to be purchased in order to get the mount back.
- โThis mission is specifically programmed to not hinder the player's progress for the achievement "Spurred to Victory", despite the player switching to a new horse.
