Player notes
John finds Jack reading an adventure book beneath a tree at Beecher's Hope. Jack tells him about its brave hunter, a man pursuing those who killed his father. John offers to teach his son how to track and hunt an elk, and Jack agrees to ride out with him.
John and Jack mount up with Rufus and follow the dog into Tall Trees. Rufus picks up an elk's trail and leads them to the animal. John kills the elk, then skins it while explaining the work to Jack. They ride on until Rufus finds another elk, giving Jack the chance to make the kill and skin it himself.
With the meat and hides loaded, John takes Jack to the store at Manzanita Post. They sell what they have taken from the elk, then leave town with Rufus. Father and son ride back across West Elizabeth and return to Beecher's Hope.
Trivia
- โWhen the player reaches the Epilogue and skins an animal as Jack, he'll occasionally say the line, "Just like you showed me, Pa," referring to this mission in particular.
- โThe book Jack is reading can be seen as a reference to Red Dead Revolver and foreshadowing to the Stranger side-mission "Remember My Family", as Jack says it's about " how this man, this brave man, hunts the man who killed his father ".
- โAlthough it appears that Jack did not finish skinning the downed elk, the corpse afterwards is the same as the elk John skins.
- โThis is the only storyline mission which involves the hunting activity.
