Esteban Cortez is a Mexican outlaw and one of the leaders of the Del Lobo Gang. His brother, Ramón Cortez, also rides with the gang. The Tumbleweed Sheriff's Office wants Esteban dead or alive for killing lawmen and robbing stagecoaches and trains. He carries a Cattleman Revolver and operates in New Austin, where the Del Lobos hold territory among the harsh country around Gaptooth Ridge.
During the epilogue, John Marston takes up the bounty on Cortez. John tracks the gang leader to Gaptooth Breach, a Del Lobo hideout in Gaptooth Ridge. Cortez has armed guards stationed around the breach, and John fights through them before reaching him. John confronts Esteban after clearing the hideout, with Ramón's capture forming part of their exchange when Ramón has already been taken in.
Cortez's fate rests on the outcome of the confrontation. John can kill him at Gaptooth Breach and take his body back to Tumbleweed, or subdue him alive for the sheriff. If captured, Esteban is delivered to Tumbleweed and placed in jail.
