Etta Buckley is an American woman living with her daughter, Meredith Buckley, in a mining cottage in Annesburg, Roanoke Ridge, New Hanover. She has raised Meredith there by 1899. Her life in the town is defined by its poverty and the nearby mines, yet she remains devoted to her daughter and tries to care for her despite their circumstances.
In 1899, Meredith is among several stagecoach passengers abducted by the Murfree Brood while travelling toward Saint Denis. The stagecoach's disappearance remains unexplained in the days that follow. Etta becomes increasingly distraught over Meredith's fate and seeks treatment for hysteria.
Dutch van der Linde sends Arthur Morgan and Charles Smith into Beaver Hollow to clear out the Murfree Brood before the Van der Linde gang moves in. After fighting through the hideout, Arthur and Charles find Meredith imprisoned in a wooden cage. Arthur reassures the frightened woman, gets her away from Beaver Hollow, and brings her back to Annesburg.
Etta is overjoyed when Arthur returns Meredith to the cottage. Grateful to have her daughter home, she offers Arthur money for rescuing her, despite having little to spare. Etta and Meredith remain together in their Annesburg home.
