Janson is an American clerk employed by Leviticus Cornwall as his secretary. He first appears arriving by ship alongside Cornwall and Cornwall's men. Cornwall meets with Agent Milton after the arrival, and Janson is present in his employer's service. His work is administrative, but Cornwall soon sends him away from the discussion on a business errand.
During the discussion, Cornwall tells Janson to telegraph Goldberg in New York about interest rates. Janson leaves to send the message, unaware that Micah Bell is trailing him on Dutch van der Linde's orders. The errand makes him part of the confrontation surrounding Cornwall, even though he has no role in the fight that follows.
After Cornwall is killed, a shootout breaks out. Micah confronts Janson in a fist fight, knocks him unconscious and takes the papers he carries. Those documents show Cornwall's company has a contract with the US Army, is moving dynamite from Annesburg to Saint Denis for resale, and holds bonds at the oil refinery. The information feeds Dutch's plans.
