Nigel is born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, and leaves England with his friend Gavin in search of a new life in America. They cross the Atlantic before 1899, but Nigel wakes one morning to find Gavin gone. He has no explanation for the disappearance and begins a relentless search for the companion he believes has been lost somewhere in the country.
During 1899, Nigel appears four times as he roams the streets and open country asking strangers about Gavin. He passes through Rhodes and Saint Denis, then continues across Roanoke Ridge and as far as Blackwater. Nervous and increasingly distressed, he calls for Gavin and insists that his friend must be nearby, but nobody he approaches can tell him where Gavin has gone.
In 1907, Nigel is still searching after about eight years apart from Gavin. He wanders through Tall Trees, around MacFarlane's Ranch, and into the desert near Lake Don Julio. His old yellow vest and Straw Boater hat are now dirty, his beard has grown, and his exhausted state is plain. He sometimes giggles while asking after Gavin, admits the length of his search, and can no longer remember what his friend looks like.

- โHe can be met in Rhodes, Saint Denis, near Beaver Hollow, Blackwater, MacFarlane's Ranch and in Tall Trees.
- โAlthough Arthur may choose to kill him, Nigel can still be seen in the Epilogue regardless.
- โNigel's situation is somewhat similar to that of Sam Odessa. Both characters are desperately trying to find something (a person, Gavin, and a place, California respectably), but are never successful, and end up going mentally insane and disheveled over time.
- โNigel tells the player that his friend Gavin is a "cockney" Londoner, but this is reportedly incorrect as Tom states they came from Berkshire and would lie about being from London. Furthermore, Nigel is shown lying in his letter to Tom about the pair becoming millionaire cowboys in America, while Gavin reportedly wrote about nothing of the sort in a letter he sent.
- โThis would possibly suggest that the pair actually had a falling out over Nigel's behavior, which is further supported by the existence of a cut restraining order from Gavin mentioned in the game files.
