Player notes

Thomas Downes is a farmer at Downes Ranch in The Heartlands, where he lives with his wife Edith and their son Archie. He also collects donations for The Charitable Organisation of New Hanover, despite his own household's financial trouble and his worsening illness. His work brings him into Valentine during the Horseshoe Overlook chapter, standing near the stables to ask townspeople for charity contributions.

Downes intervenes outside Smithfield's Saloon when Arthur Morgan continues beating Tommy after winning their fight. Arthur dismisses him. Downes later gives money to poor people in Valentine and may ask Arthur for a donation, coughing as he speaks. Unable to support his family and repay what he owes, he has already taken a loan from Leopold Strauss.

Strauss sends Arthur to Downes Ranch to collect the debt. Downes says he has no money, and Arthur responds by threatening and striking the frail rancher. Downes coughs up blood during the assault, some of it reaching Arthur's mouth. Edith and Archie rush to Thomas while Edith pleads for more time, but Arthur leaves after demanding the money.

Thomas dies sometime after Arthur's visit. Edith and Archie blame Arthur for his death. Months later, while Arthur is travelling to meet Sadie Adler and rescue John Marston, a violent coughing fit leaves him unconscious. A doctor tells Arthur that he has terminal tuberculosis. Arthur later writes that he believes he caught the disease from the blood of the man he beat at Downes Ranch.

Trivia

  • โ—†Unlike most of the other loan shark missions, "Money Lending and Other Sins III" is mandatory, making it impossible to prevent Arthur from contracting tuberculosis.
  • โ—†Additionally, when Arthur confronts Downes during this, the player cannot wear a mask (I.E. the Bandana) and if attempting to do so, Arthur will take it off.
  • โ—†During the fundraising event in Valentine, the dialogue will vary depending on whether the player has completed "Americans at Rest".
  • โ—†Thomas cannot be lassoed, hogtied or killed. However, he can become a witness and will try to report the player if the latter has committed any crimes near him. Downes can be also robbed with the use of exploits.
  • โ—†His grave marker incorrectly spells his name as "Thomas Downs".
  • โ—†In the second trailer for the game, Edith can be seen mourning at his grave in Valentine. In the files, he has an unused grave near this spot that differs from the final version.
  • โ—†The player can collect Downes' hat by shooting it off his head before beating him, though they cannot keep it as it will not be saved in the wardrobe.
