Player notes
The Laramie Gang is a band of hired enforcers who work for wealthy land buyers. When an owner refuses to sell, they use threats and violence to force a deal. Before 1907, Abel Atherton hires them to put pressure on David Geddes, the owner of Pronghorn Ranch. Their known member is Bart Cavanaugh, while their leader remains unidentified. The gang operates from Hanging Dog Ranch in Big Valley.
John Marston first crosses paths with the gang when he brings a supply wagon to Pronghorn Ranch in 1907. Two Laramie men seize the wagon and ride off with it. John pursues them, recovers the supplies, and becomes a ranch hand for Geddes. Later, several gang members come to the ranch and threaten Abe. John steps in and fights their leader, sending the men away.
The gang returns a few days later to retaliate against Pronghorn Ranch. Its men kill two workers, drive off the ranch's cattle, and set buildings alight. John joins Tom Dickens and Abe in an assault on Hanging Dog Ranch. Dickens covers the ranch from above, Abe takes position behind it, and John enters from the front to clear out the Laramie men.
After the fight at Hanging Dog Ranch, John confronts the gang's leader and executes him. The attack destroys most of the group at the ranch, but the Laramie Gang remains active in 1907. Its surviving men occupy Hanging Dog Ranch and can also be found around Big Valley, where they remain hostile to anyone approaching them.

- โThe Laramie Gang cannot be encountered before the epilogue.
- โUnlike any other gang in the game, the Laramie Gang is the only one whose members are identified as "Stranger" instead of their own gang name when the player interacts with them.
- โDespite only being active in Big Valley, their gang photo depicts them in New Austin. This may be a developer oversight, or it could imply the gang was supposed to appear in New Austin as well.
- โIn newspapers they are called the "Laramie Corp." The name is a reference to the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, which became a powerful economic and political force with corporate-like interests by the 1890s. The Association often hired groups of gunmen, ostensibly to eliminate cattle rustlers, but also more pointedly to attack small farms and independent ranches.
- โLaramie, derived from the French surname LaRamie, often refers to various locations in Wyoming, including a city, county, river, and mountain range. The gangโs characteristics and actions in the game (including intimidation, assassination, etc.) reflect those of gunmen hired typically by large ranches during the early 1890s in Wyomingโs infamous Johnson County War, which has been a popular basis for countless Western novels, films, and television shows.
