Player notes

At Horseshoe Overlook, Abigail Roberts asks Arthur Morgan to take Jack out for a while, believing the boy needs something to do. Arthur agrees and finds Jack Marston playing in the grass. He offers to take him fishing, then puts Jack on his horse and rides with him toward the Dakota River. During the journey, Jack asks about the Penny Dreadful storybook he left at the gang's old camp near Blackwater. Arthur tells him they cannot return there, but promises to find him another book.

Arthur and Jack reach the riverbank, where Arthur gives the boy a fishing rod and teaches him to fish with cheese bait. Jack soon wanders off to gather flowers while Arthur catches fish. He returns with a flower necklace he has made, but their quiet trip is interrupted by two Pinkerton agents, Andrew Milton and Edgar Ross. Milton says they are looking for Dutch van der Linde after the Cornwall train robbery near Granite Pass. Arthur denies knowing Dutch, until Milton reveals that Mac Callander was captured after Blackwater and tortured to death.

Milton offers Arthur the chance to hand Dutch over, but Arthur refuses. The agents leave, warning him that the gang's way of life will end violently. Arthur takes Jack back toward Horseshoe Overlook. The boy asks why Arthur lied about Dutch and what happened to Mac, and Arthur tells him not to concern himself with disagreeable men. After returning Jack to Abigail, Arthur tells Dutch about Milton and Ross. Dutch decides the gang should remain calm and do nothing.

Trivia

  • โ—†The name of the mission may be a reference to Matthew 4:19 and Mark 1:17, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."
  • โ—†When asked why Abigail chose Arthur in the opening cutscene, she can give two different lines, saying that Jack likes him or because he does what he says. This is seemingly random and not determined by the player's honor level.
  • โ—†Furthermore, if Arthur doesn't immediately go to Jack and hangs around Abigail, she will comment on Jack's needs for entertainment, as well as his location.
  • โ—†If the player rides slow enough, Arthur will point out the local wildlife.
  • โ—†If Arthur tramples an animal with his horse, Jack will comment on it.
  • โ—†The player cannot crash their horse into objects such as trees, nor fall/jump off cliffs in the typical fashion where Arthur falls off the horse, due to how Jack would also fall off: the player cannot injure nor see Jack injured during the mission. Attempting to go off a cliff while on horseback will immediately cause a "Failed" screen before the player becomes airborne, with the message "Jack was frightened".
  • โ—†If the player crosses the deeper part of the Dakota River with Jack on horseback, the mission will fail stating that the player's horse has died.
  • โ—†While fishing, Arthur may allude to his son, Isaac. He tells Jack while fishing that he taught another boy to fish a long time ago. When Jack asks if it was Lenny, Arthur says it wasn't, clarifying that it was long before he met Lenny and long before Jack's birth.
  • โ—†During the mission, Agent Milton curses Arthur for rejecting the offer to hand Dutch over, saying of the Van der Linde gang, "You people venerate savagery, and you will die... savagely... all of you!" Arthur later remembers the last part of Milton's quote during "A Fork in the Road" if his Honor is low.
  • โ—†At the end of the confrontation, as Milton and Ross return to their horses, the player can see that Arthur is about to draw his gun to shoot them, only avoiding so because of Jack's presence. This is considered a major "what if" moment, because if Arthur killed them during this mission, it would have altered the following events of Redemption 2 and Redemption, if not making the latter impossible.
  • โ—†This mission can be considered an echo to the ending of Redemption. During the fishing trip, Jack meets Agent Ross for the first time, next to a river. Years later, in revenge of his father's death, Jack kills Agent Ross when the latter is hunting ducks next to a river, thus concluding the storyline of Redemption. Ross even foreshadows his own death when he says, "Enjoy your fishing, kid... while you still can."
  • โ—†In this mission, Agent Milton also foreshadows his own death: when Arthur says, "Oh, we're all gonna die, Agent," he says in response, "Some of us sooner than others." In the final mission that the player plays as Arthur, Milton is killed by Abigail when he tries to kill Arthur, thus dying before him.
  • โ—†After returning to camp and informing Dutch of Agent Milton and Ross, Hosea will also approach Arthur asking about the Pinkertons.
  • โ—†If the mission is started at night, a slightly different cutscene will occur, where Arthur says he will take Jack fishing in the morning, before heading to bed. The mission continues as normal when he wakes up.
  • โ—†If Arthur had previously bought Jack new clothes, he will thank Arthur for the new pants while fishing.
  • โ—†While Jack and Arthur are fishing, Milton and Ross' horses are spawned in behind them but are invisible. Despite the player being unable to interact with them, it is still possible to search the saddlebags and get kicked down by an invisible horse.
