Player notes

After the failed Blackwater ferry robbery, the Van der Linde gang struggles through a blizzard in Ambarino. Arthur Morgan leads the exhausted caravan to the abandoned mining settlement of Colter, where Davey Callander is carried into a cabin and dies of his wounds. Dutch van der Linde tells the survivors to hold together while Colter becomes their camp. He leaves with Arthur to find food and supplies, while also looking for Micah Bell and John Marston. Arthur asks Dutch about the ferry robbery, but Dutch avoids giving him an answer.

Arthur and Dutch soon meet Micah, who has found a homestead at Adler Ranch in Grizzlies West. They approach the house cautiously, with Arthur taking cover by a shed and Micah hiding behind a wagon while Dutch speaks at the door. Micah finds a corpse in the wagon, and the men inside reveal themselves as O'Driscolls. When they threaten Dutch, Arthur, Dutch and Micah kill the attackers, though one O'Driscoll escapes.

Dutch sends Arthur through the house for provisions, where he finds food, ammunition and signs that its residents were attacked. In the barn, an O'Driscoll drops onto Arthur and fights him. Arthur forces the man to reveal an O'Driscoll camp near a lake and their plans for a train robbery, then decides his fate. Arthur calms a Tennessee Walker and leads it outside. Micah discovers Sadie Adler hiding in the cellar, frightening her until a lantern starts a fire. Dutch disarms Sadie and brings her with them as Arthur, Dutch, Micah and Sadie ride back to Colter.

Trivia

  • โ—†This mission will automatically continue into the second mission of Chapter 1, "Enter, Pursued by a Memory."
  • โ—†It is possible to open the map during the intro cutscene. Micah, Charles, and Dutch all have map markers with the former indicating that Micah was sent scouting while Arthur led the gang to Colter.
  • โ—†If Arthur follows Micah into the cabin, he'll have a couple of lines of dialogue with one of them being to "be a good boy" and check the barn.
  • โ—†Despite appearing alongside the gang's caravan in the intro, Javier and his horse are not present anywhere at Colter during this mission. Given that the gang's eight draft horses are not present at Colter as well, it is implied that Javier rode off to take them to another location after the caravan's arrival and possibly to retrieve Maggie and Brown Jack, who are also not present until later.
  • โ—†The Old Lantern is exclusive to this mission and will clip into the player's saddlebags when Arthur places it there. Similarly, the blanket that Dutch places on Taima will float a considerable distance above her.
  • โ—†Javier and Micah ride Standard Horses in the first cutscene due to an oversight, while Bill can be seen riding The Count; likely because Dutch was taking a break from riding him. Due to the cutscene's extremely dim lighting, these details are extremely difficult to notice during normal gameplay.
  • โ—†Hosea's first lines mention that it's May at the time the mission takes place. This would mean the events of the first six chapters likely take place from May 1899 until late in the year, with Chapter 2 possibly starting in either late May or early June 1899.
  • โ—†Also, his first line, "If we don't stop soon we'll all be dying," will be the one that Arthur remembers in "A Fork in the Road" if his Honor is high.
  • โ—†The opening scene of the gang's caravan going through the snowstorm actually takes place out of bounds. The area is northwest of Spider Gorge past the map boundary and exists on its own separate map (located just above the real map) that will unload after the cutscene ends.
  • โ—†The encouraging speech Dutch gives in the opening cutscene will be repeated by him, albeit with some slight variations, once the gang set up camp at Horseshoe Overlook.
  • โ—†If glitched into the cabin, the player can visit Davey's corpse as well as greet all the gang members inside. To get in, the player must dismount their horse to the left of the door and immediately go into first person view as they continue to walk forward; this will cause the door to open, and make it possible for Arthur to enter.
  • โ—†As of patch 1.14, the glitch is impossible to do.
  • โ—†If Arthur takes cover in the wrong spot, Dutch will comment on it.
  • โ—†If Arthur doesn't protect Dutch from the O'Driscolls by shooting one of them, Micah will do it instead.
  • โ—†If the player uses mods to follow the O'Driscoll runner during the shootout, he can be seen stopping nearby the road, outside of Adler Ranch.
  • โ—†If Arthur picks up Sadie's wedding photograph while Dutch is still in the cabin with him, the latter will say to put down anything they can't use. Arthur will also say that the "poor bastard" must have been married prior to his murder.
  • โ—†After Micah discovers and scares Sadie, Dutch comes to her aid. This proves to be somewhat prophetic when in "American Venom", the final mission of the game, Dutch comes to Sadie's aid against Micah once more.
  • โ—†After leaving the barn to hitch the horse it is no longer possible to enter it as there is an invisible wall.
  • โ—†If Arthur spares the O'Driscoll, the latter will be seen again in the mission "Old Friends". He will also taunt him in the mission saying Arthur should have killed him when he had the chance.
  • โ—†A few of the O'Driscolls' horses can be seen outside of the barn, but will run off during the shootout.
  • โ—†If the player uses mods to follow the O'Driscoll after Arthur spares him, he can be seen passing through Colter and riding around Big Valley.
  • โ—†During free roam at Colter, Arthur may offer to give Sadie the horse he took from the barn back, but Sadie will say that he belonged to an O'Driscoll and that she wouldn't care if he killed him, though the horse appears at her barn in Red Dead Online, likely due to an oversight.
  • โ—†The compendium may be accessed during this mission, but it will be locked afterwards and remain locked until "The Aftermath of Genesis".
  • โ—†If Arthur is disarmed during the shootout with the O'Driscolls, he won't be able to pick up his gun. However, the gun will respawn during the cutscene when he enters the barn.
  • โ—†This is the only mission in the game when a gang member's horse (Taima, Charles' horse) is intended to be ridden.
  • โ—†The majority of the game's opening sequence could have been inspired by the 1992 crime film Reservoir Dogs, the directorial debut of Quentin Tarantino, which begins right after the conclusion to a bogged robbery.
