Player notes

At Colter, Simon Pearson tells Arthur Morgan that the gang's food is running out. Much of the supplies were left behind during the escape from Blackwater, and Bill Williamson and Lenny Summers have returned from hunting empty-handed. Charles Smith joins them and volunteers to find deer with Arthur. Pearson gives Arthur some salted offal, while Charles provides him with a bow and arrows.

Arthur rides out with Charles into Grizzlies West. Charles says he burned his right hand while getting away from Blackwater, then leads Arthur to a stretch of uncovered snow near a stream, where animal tracks can be seen. They leave their horses and approach quietly. Arthur uses Eagle Eye to follow a deer's trail, kills it with the bow, then hunts a second deer before loading both carcasses onto their horses.

On the ride back through Ambarino, Arthur and Charles discuss the gang's flight from Blackwater, their enemies and the prospect of finding somewhere safe despite the bounties on their heads. They encounter a bear on the trail and guide their horses around it rather than confront it. Arthur asks why Charles remains with the gang, and Charles says he no longer wants to live alone after being treated fairly by its members.

Arthur and Charles return to Colter and hitch their horses outside the camp. They carry the deer to Pearson, with Uncle briefly nearby, and Charles goes off to deal with the other carcass. Pearson asks Arthur to help prepare the meat. Arthur skins the deer for him at the camp's kitchen.

Trivia

  • โ—†This mission unlocks Eagle Eye. Even so, the player does not actually need to use it to find the first deer as they can just follow its footprints in the snow.
  • โ—†During the ride on the way to hunt deer, Charles tells Arthur that he mistakenly burned his right hand while escaping from Blackwater, which is a reference to Red Harlow, as Red was also part Native American and burned the same hand in the beginning of his story.
  • โ—†It is possible for Arthur's honor to decrease if the player only wounds a deer and allows it to bleed out, rather than put it out of its misery.
  • โ—†Arthur may use another weapon instead of the bow to kill the deer and not fail the mission, but Charles will get upset.
  • โ—†Rarely, a glitch can occur if the player takes too long to grab the bow off their horse that results in Charles' AI becoming frozen, and forcing the player to restart the mission.
  • โ—†If "Old Friends" was completed before this mission, Arthur will mention the attack on the O'Driscolls' camp and talk about Kieran Duffy while riding with Charles.
  • โ—†It is impossible to kill the bear during this mission, all the player can do is to scare it off.
  • โ—†When Arthur and Charles see the bear, Arthur can ask Charles if they should kill it for its meat. Charles will say that the deer are enough and they won't be able to carry both.
  • โ—†If the player shoots at the bear, Charles will express his frustrations at his remarks about the bear being ignored.
  • โ—†If this mission is completed after "Old Friends", it will automatically continue into the fifth mission of Chapter 1, "Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall?".
  • โ—†If the mission is completed before Old Friends, the player can encounter Hosea at the butcher's table and have a conversation with him.
  • โ—†Depending on whether this mission was completed before or after "Old Friends", Arthur and Charles will have different dialogue about how they've picked up more mouths to feed. If after, Arthur will jokingly say they can feed Kieran the salted offal Pearson gave them at the start of the mission.
  • โ—†If the mission is played after "Old Friends", the player can use Dead Eye to kill the deer to ensure clean kills for Gold Medal objective.
