About this weapon
Fists are the unarmed weapon for hand-to-hand combat in Red Dead Redemption 2. They let the player fight at close range with punches, kicks and other melee attacks rather than firearms or ammunition. They are useful when ammunition is scarce or when drawing attention would cause trouble. Fists also suit situations where an opponent must be subdued without being killed, including robberies and intimidation.
At close range, the player can beat an opponent into submission or seize them and continue striking. A grabbed person can be forced to the ground or pulled upright again. This hold is unavailable while another weapon is equipped. Near a window or table, a grab can lead to a finishing move, with the opponent thrown through the window or struck against the furniture. Choking an enemy beside a flat wall can produce a different hold against the surface.
Fists trade the killing power of bladed melee weapons for non-lethal control. Crouching behind an enemy allows a stealth takedown, which the game treats as non-lethal even though its sound effects suggest otherwise. A person left after such a takedown may regain consciousness and walk away with a lasting tired posture. When bloodshed is wanted, fists can be combined with a bladed melee weapon instead.
Trivia
- โAnimals, like dogs and chickens, can be kicked by pressing the attack button while having the fists equipped.
- โIf crouched while the player has their fists equipped and presses the trigger, Marston will do a visually stronger punch, while some characters will do a swinging right hook or an uppercut.
- โIn Blackwater, Marston can pick a fight with a police officer, not gain a wanted level or bounty, and have no loss in honor. But if another police officer sees the fight, the two officers will gang up on Marston, making the fight considerably harder and with more risk of being knocked out.
- โIf the player runs up and "pushes" someone riding a horse, they will be knocked off and the horse will run away.
- โIn most cases, punching a woman will result in them screaming and running away. Also, if the player manage to knock out a woman, an eye witness will try to report them, resulting in the player character getting you a bounty.
- โIt is possible to kill the undead in hand to hand combat in Undead Nightmare.
- โIf the player starts a fistfight before starting one of Bonnie's missons that shows her sitting outside her house, she will sometimes get up from her seat and fight along with the player and start to punch the other fighter. The same happens with Landon Ricketts.
- โIf the player finds the NPCs fist-fighting in the wild and doesn't break it up, one of the NPCs will die. This is the only time an NPC can be killed with fists.
- โGrabbing or tackling a healthy enemy and initiating three punches would always result in a knockout. This does not apply to certain missions where the moveset is replaced.
- โWith a gun equipped, performing a melee attack twice in quick succession also guarantees a non-lethal knockout.
- โGrabbing an enemy from behind while holding a handgun will trigger a body hostage stance. Due to the mechanics of the game, the player cannot actually hold an enemy as a shield for a duration that would count as being tactically viable, nor can they shoot at other NPCs while holding onto the enemy.
- โWhile kicking isn't tied to any button prompt, the player character can still perform one by pressing the attack button when an enemy is either down or standing on a lower ground compared to where the player is standing.
- โTackling or tipping an enemy into a body of water shallow enough to stand on will force the player character to drown them regardless of intention or health.
- โSometimes, an enemy may equip a knife in the middle of a fistfight.
