About this weapon

The D.D. Packenbush LeMat is a cap-and-ball revolver with a nine-round revolving chamber. Beneath its main barrel sits a smoothbore barrel loaded with a single buckshot round. By changing the hammer's firing pin, its user can alternate between Revolver Ammo and Shotgun Ammo. The weapon therefore combines a standard revolver with a one-shot shotgun barrel.

Firing Revolver Ammo, the LeMat deals more damage than any other revolver. Its damage and accuracy slightly exceed those of the Schofield Revolver and Volcanic Pistol, and are well above the Double-Action and Cattleman revolvers. Express Ammo can bring its damage close to that of weaker rifles. Its rate of fire and reload speed are the slowest in its class, though its nine-round capacity exceeds the usual six. The shotgun barrel performs like a Sawed-Off Shotgun with one available shot.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, the LeMat Revolver becomes available from the Saint Denis gunsmith after "The Gilded Cage" in Chapter 4, for $172. It is the most expensive revolver in the game. In Red Dead Online, it can be bought from any gunsmith or through the handheld Wheeler, Rawson and Co. Catalogue for $317. It is used as a high-damage sidearm whose secondary barrel provides a close-range buckshot shot when the revolver chamber is empty or a shotgun blast is needed.

◆The LeMat Revolver is the only weapon in the Redemption saga to feature a secondary firing mode.
◆Unlike the previous game's model, the reload animation for the LeMat Revolver in Redemption 2 is correct for a cap and ball revolver, although it is difficult to notice this with it being displayed so fast. First, the user places the paper cartridge in the front of the cylinder with two fingers, then places the percussion cap on the nipple at the rear of the cylinder with their thumb, and finally operates the lever to press the cartridge into the cylinder.
◆The shotgun is also loaded as a paper cartridge, which gets stuffed by a small ramrod stored in the ramrod lever.
◆There were cartridge-firing versions of the LeMat revolver produced (either for centerfire or pinfire rounds), although they looked a bit different from the original percussion model the in-game weapon is based on; they had a distinct, shorter cylinder and the Belgian centerfire variant also had a different grip.
◆Upon close inspection when firing, especially in first-person, players can see bits and pieces of the percussion cap being blasted off when the hammer drops and strikes it, along with smoke and sparks. This effect is exclusive to the LeMat revolver and the Navy Revolver in Red Dead Online.
◆Historically, the LeMat was named after its designer, French physician Jean Alexandre LeMat.
◆The LeMat revolver was exclusively wielded by the Confederacy in the American Civil War, being popular with Confederate officers like J. E. B. Stuart.
◆The LeMat Revolver's firing sounds are the same as the Schofield's.
