About this weapon
The Cattleman Revolver is a six-shot revolver in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online. It is a common all-purpose sidearm, built for close and medium-range fighting rather than exceptional power at distance. It carries six rounds, holds up to 400 rounds of Revolver Ammo, and is sold for $50. It accepts Regular, High Velocity, Split Point, Express and Explosive revolver ammunition.
Arthur Morgan begins Red Dead Redemption 2 with a Cattleman Revolver, while the weapon is available from the start in Red Dead Online. A second standard model can be bought from any gunsmith or taken from a killed NPC. In Red Dead Online, it can also be ordered through the Handheld Catalog and collected from a horse, Post Office or Camp.
The Cattleman balances moderate damage, accuracy and range with a fast rate of fire, particularly when fired from the hip. It is suited to general combat, can be dual-wielded, and can be used from horseback. Rifling extends its range, while a longer barrel and improved iron sights improve accuracy. Shots to the head, neck or upper chest can kill with one round, unlike torso shots, which may take several.
Trivia
- ◆The Cattleman Revolver is based on the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army Revolver.
- ◆Based on the 5.5 inch Artillery model. When the long barrel is bought and put at the Gunsmith, it becomes the Cavalry model with the 7.5 inch barrel.
- ◆Unlike a real gun, when reloading the player never half-cocks the revolver in order to make the cylinder rotate. Same applies to NPCs.
- ◆The Cattleman Revolver is by far the most widely used weapon among various NPCs, Lawmen and bandits. This can be seen as a historical accuracy of the game, as the Colt Model 1873 is generally regarded as the most popular revolver of the Old West. In addition to the appeal of its reliability and other qualities, its popularity came about in part because by 1877 Colt made models of this weapon that could use ammunition that was compatible with the Winchester Model 1873 repeater (and later the Winchester Model 1892).
- ◆John Marston has his own unique Cattleman Revolver, as well as various other gang members such as Hosea Matthews, Sadie Adler, Kieran Duffy, Sean MacGuire and Lenny Summers, who also have their own unique versions.
- ◆Charles Smith is shown owning a Cattleman Revolver in “That’s Murfree Country” when Arthur asks Charles to accompany him, but he swaps it out for his custom Sawed-Off Shotgun when he learns their destination.
- ◆Although the word "cattleman" can be thought of as a pun of the older word "cowboy", the former originated as a serious term in the 1860s with the rise of large ranches and the demands for raising and herding cattle on a large scale.
- ◆Once the player has an Honor rank of +4 or higher (75%+ on the Honor bar), the unique Hero's Pearl Grip will become purchasable at any Gunsmith for this weapon only.
- ◆During "Jim Milton Rides, Again?" and "Pouring Forth Oil IV", the revolver is seen with an incorrect swing-out cylinder.
- ◆Given that the weapon is given to the player from the start, it is impossible to “View” the weapon from Gunsmith catalogue and hear their dialogues.
- ◆Alfredo Montez utilizes a Cattleman Revolver customized with an ebony grip.
- ◆The Cattleman is one of the fastest reloading revolvers in the game. This is in stark contrast with its real life counterpart, as its gate-loading mechanism means that it reloads very slowly with each empty case needing to be ejected before new cartridges are inserted one by one.
