Agnes Dowd tombe amoureuse d'un homme que ses parents rejettent, et le retrouve en secret sous un vieil arbre de Bluewater Marsh. Il lui donne un fils, puis quitte Agnes pour une autre femme et révèle leur relation à sa famille. Le déshonneur la rend indésirable aux yeux des autres prétendants. Agnes le persuade plus tard d'abandonner l'autre femme, mais ne parvient pas à convaincre sa mère et son père de l'accepter. Son père sort une arme et tue l'homme devant elle.
La suite est incertaine. Les cris d'Agnes suggèrent que le chagrin la pousse à sombrer, après quoi elle tue son père par vengeance. Sa mère, son fils et d'autres personnes meurent peut-être également de sa main. Agnes finit par se pendre au même arbre où elle retrouvait son amant, espérant qu'il l'y trouvera. Une pierre tombale du cimetière privé de Shady Belle porte son nom, son âge et les crimes qui lui sont attribués.
Entre 21 h et 3 h, Agnes apparaît sous forme de fantôme dans le brouillard de Bluewater Marsh. Arthur Morgan ou John Marston l'entend et l'aperçoit parfois revivre des fragments de sa vie, bien que les scènes ne suivent aucun ordre précis et qu'elle disparaisse lorsqu'on l'approche. Lors de la dernière rencontre, Agnes admet savoir qu'elle a été observée et l'appelle vers l'arbre. Son corps y est suspendu, immobile au bout de sa corde.
Anecdotes
- ◆Agnes Dowd is very similar to the ghost of Jolene Cranley-Evans from Grand Theft Auto V, another title by Rockstar Games, as they both are ghosts of women who died tragically and who only appear at night and disappear when approached by the player.
- ◆In Chapter 4, Reverend Swanson, visibly spooked and disturbed, shall approach other gang members saying that he has seen ghosts, and when interacted with, he will claim to have seen "the ghost of a young lady, a woman in white" around the marsh.
- ◆The description used by Swanson for her ("woman in white") may be a reference to a Hispanic American folkloric legend about a woman who killed herself out of love, named La Llorona in Hispanic America and Woman in White in the United States. Many versions of what drove her into suicide exists, the most famous being the one which she murdered her children after being abandoned by her husband.
- ◆A gravestone bearing her name can be found just behind Shady Belle, among a group of tombstones. It reads: Agnes Dowd, aged 19, tragically took her life and others. It is unknown which other people Dowd killed, if it's just a metaphor, or whether this account of events is true.
- ◆The date of her death - September 4th, 1883 - is two weeks before the massacre that killed the residents of Pleasance.
- ◆A lockbox and gallows noose can be found at the tree next to which her ghost appears.
- ◆In the last encounter, a Ghost Orchid may spawn near the tree from which she hanged herself.

- ◆Madam Nazar is aware of Agnes and, due to her mediumship, has gone to Bluewater Marsh to "keep her company" out of sympathy for her, but states that from the tortured Agnes's perspective, she is "not who she wants", alluding to Agnes's deceased lover.
- ◆It's actually possible to "kill" Agnes' ghost if the player throws a tomahawk at her. Looting her will give the player some money and her wedding ring, as well as no Honor loss.
- ◆After Agnes' ghost fades away or when the dialogue ends (when the ghost isn't visible), it is possible for your horse to be spooked, regardless of whether there are predators near you.
