Arthur retrouve Dutch, Eagle Flies et des guerriers Wapiti sur une falaise de Cumberland Forest. Dutch expose son plan d'embuscade contre une patrouille de l'armée : de la dynamite abattra des arbres sur la route de la vallée, piégeant les soldats afin que les Wapiti puissent les humilier et les chasser. Arthur s'y oppose, mais aide Dutch à tendre un fil entre le détonateur et les charges. Dutch admet que l'attaque détournera l'attention du gouvernement du gang Van der Linde vers les Wapiti, une utilisation d'Eagle Flies qu'Arthur condamne.
La patrouille entre dans la vallée et les arbres s'abattent autour d'elle. Dutch ordonne aux soldats piégés de se rendre, mais des renforts arrivent et ouvrent le feu. Arthur, Dutch et les Wapiti combattent les deux groupes. Alors qu'ils fouillent les morts, des tirs de canon annoncent une nouvelle attaque. Arthur atteint le canon et tue son opérateur, puis aide à éliminer les soldats. Eagle Flies part à la recherche de Paytah, qui est blessé, tandis qu'Arthur confronte Dutch sur ce qu'ils ont fait.
D'autres troupes arrivent à cheval depuis Fort Wallace, forçant Arthur et Dutch à laisser Eagle Flies derrière eux et à fuir à cheval. Ils s'engagent dans un passage rocheux, abandonnent leurs chevaux là où le chemin se resserre, puis combattent à pied tandis que les soldats les poursuivent. Un pont détruit les laisse acculés au-dessus de la Dakota River. Ils se rendent, reculent jusqu'au bord de la falaise sous bonne garde, puis sautent dans la rivière et nagent jusqu'à sa rive. Dutch suppose qu'Eagle Flies a été capturé ou tué, puis part demander à Charles de préparer un sauvetage.
Anecdotes
- ◆Before Arthur and Dutch jump down the river, Dutch tells the captain of how nature or gravity can’t be beaten on the cliffside. This is a foreshadowing of Dutch's last words in Red Dead Redemption before taking his own life by falling off of a cliff.
- ◆The moment when Dutch and Arthur jump off the cliff is an homage to the famous scene of the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), in which the titular protagonists likewise jump off a cliff into a river in order to escape authorities. Frame for frame, the camera angle and lighting of the jumps are nearly identical.
- ◆If the player neglects to detonate the explosives at the right time, Dutch will do it instead.
- ◆When Arthur is looting the corpses of the fallen soldiers, he mentions to Dutch that one of them is "...some poor fool from New Jersey". In real life, Arthur's actor Roger Clark was born in New Jersey.
- ◆If the player attempts to kill all soldiers that are holding Arthur and Dutch at gunpoint, the camera's view will start spinning around and this will result in a one-hit-kill from an invincible sniper on a cliff. The only way to take out the sniper is to make them fall off the cliff.
