Favored Sons

Arthur meets Dutch, Eagle Flies and Wapiti warriors on a cliff in Cumberland Forest. Dutch outlines an ambush on an army patrol: dynamite will fell trees across the valley road, trapping the soldiers so the Wapiti can shame them and send them away. Arthur objects, but helps Dutch run wire from the detonator to the charges. Dutch admits that the attack will draw government attention from the Van der Linde gang to the Wapiti, a use of Eagle Flies that Arthur condemns.

The patrol enters the valley and the trees come down around it. Dutch orders the trapped soldiers to surrender, but reinforcements arrive and open fire. Arthur, Dutch and the Wapiti fight through both groups. While they search the dead, cannon fire announces another attack. Arthur reaches the cannon and kills its operator, then helps clear the soldiers. Eagle Flies goes after the wounded Paytah, while Arthur challenges Dutch over what they have done.

More troops ride from Fort Wallace, forcing Arthur and Dutch to leave Eagle Flies behind and flee on horseback. They enter a rocky pass, abandon their horses where the way narrows, and fight on foot as soldiers pursue them. A broken bridge leaves them cornered above the Dakota River. They surrender, retreat to the cliff edge under guard, then jump into the river and swim to its bank. Dutch assumes Eagle Flies has been taken or killed, and leaves to have Charles prepare a rescue.
