Os Wapiti Indians são um povo indígena de The Heartlands, em New Hanover, liderado pelo chefe Rains Fall. Anos de guerra contra colonos e o governo dos Estados Unidos os enfraquecem, e tratados sucessivos não os protegem antes que um terceiro os confine à Wapiti Indian Reservation, em Ambarino. Colonel Favours e Leviticus Cornwall querem expulsá-los novamente para explorar o petróleo sob a reserva. A Van der Linde gang vê Wapiti pela primeira vez ao deixar Colter, quando Charles Smith garante a Arthur Morgan e Hosea Matthews que eles não pretendem fazer mal.
Em Saint Denis, Evelyn Miller apresenta Arthur a Rains Fall e a seu filho, Eagle Flies. Eagle Flies contrata Arthur para tirar da refinaria de Cornwall documentos que podem expor o plano contra seu povo. Arthur entra na refinaria, e Eagle Flies provoca uma explosão para ajudá-lo a escapar dos guardas. Arthur entrega os papéis e recebe o pagamento. Depois que a gangue chega a Beaver Hollow, Eagle Flies e Paytah acompanham Dutch van der Linde, Arthur e Charles na recuperação de cavalos roubados por soldados perto de Fort Wallace.
Mais tarde, Arthur cavalga com Rains Fall, que lhe mostra um local sagrado profanado e pede que recupere os objetos roubados sem derramar sangue. Eagle Flies leva guerreiros Wapiti à refinaria de Cornwall e pede ajuda à gangue para destruí-la. Rains Fall tenta impedir o ataque, mas seu filho segue adiante com Dutch, Arthur, Charles e os guerreiros. Durante o assalto, Eagle Flies é baleado ao salvar Arthur. Arthur e Charles o levam até Rains Fall, na reserva, onde Eagle Flies morre ao lado do pai. No fim de 1899, os Wapiti restantes fogem da reserva. Eles acabam se estabelecendo no Canadá, onde Rains Fall continua como líder em 1907.

- ◆Wapiti Avenue in Blackwater is named after the tribe. This was common practice in the United States to name streets, cities, and even several states after the local Indian inhabitants, often despite a near-total wipeout of most local Indian populations.
- ◆Wapiti, also known as Elk, is one of the largest species of Deer and is endemic to the North American continent. The word "wapiti" (sometimes spelled "waapiti") is of Shawnee origin and literally translates to "white rump."
- ◆The fictional Wapiti tribe is not based on any single tribe but instead is a composite of Native American groups mostly from the Plains and Rocky Mountain regions, such as the Cheyenne, Blackfeet, Crow, Ute, Arapaho, and especially the Sioux given that the members of the tribe speak the Lakota language.
- ◆Conversations and newspaper articles in the game speak of the Wapitis’ plight in standing up to outsiders who wish to take their reservation land because of its purported deposits of oil. - ◆In the Epilogue, the player can encounter Native Americans, who are observing them from out of in-game bounds. They can be seen at the Mexican side of Manteca Falls or near the waterfall at the Lower Montana River.

- ◆Wapiti is also the name of an unincorporated community in Park County, Wyoming. The Grizzlies East region shares similarities with northwestern Wyoming, where Park County is located.
- ◆The Wapiti seem to have knowledge of the Murfree Brood, as Charles Smith mentions some of the Natives talking about them.
