Los Wapiti Indians son un pueblo indígena de The Heartlands, New Hanover, dirigido por el jefe Rains Fall. Los años de guerra contra los colonos y el gobierno de Estados Unidos los debilitan, y varios tratados no les dan protección antes de que un tercero los confine a la Wapiti Indian Reservation, en Ambarino. Colonel Favours y Leviticus Cornwall quieren expulsarlos otra vez para explotar el petróleo bajo la reserva. En Saint Denis, Evelyn Miller presenta a Arthur a Rains Fall y a su hijo, Eagle Flies. Eagle Flies contrata a Arthur para sacar de la refinería de Cornwall unos documentos que pueden revelar el plan contra su pueblo. Arthur se interna en la refinería, y Eagle Flies provoca una explosión para ayudarlo a escapar de los guardias. Arthur entrega los papeles y cobra el pago. Tras la llegada de la banda a Beaver Hollow, Eagle Flies y Paytah acompañan a Dutch van der Linde, Arthur y Charles a recuperar caballos robados por soldados cerca de Fort Wallace.
Más tarde, Arthur cabalga con Rains Fall, quien le enseña un lugar sagrado profanado y le pide recuperar los objetos robados sin matar a nadie. Arthur también ayuda a Captain Monroe a recuperar vacunas retenidas para los Wapiti enfermos. Dutch convence a Eagle Flies de atacar una patrulla del Ejército, pero los soldados lo capturan. Arthur y Charles lo rescatan de Fort Wallace después de que Favours rechaza la propuesta de paz de Rains Fall y ordena arrestar a Monroe. - ◆Wapiti Avenue in Blackwater is named after the tribe. This was common practice in the United States to name streets, cities, and even several states after the local Indian inhabitants, often despite a near-total wipeout of most local Indian populations.
- ◆Wapiti, also known as Elk, is one of the largest species of Deer and is endemic to the North American continent. The word "wapiti" (sometimes spelled "waapiti") is of Shawnee origin and literally translates to "white rump."
- ◆The fictional Wapiti tribe is not based on any single tribe but instead is a composite of Native American groups mostly from the Plains and Rocky Mountain regions, such as the Cheyenne, Blackfeet, Crow, Ute, Arapaho, and especially the Sioux given that the members of the tribe speak the Lakota language.
- ◆Conversations and newspaper articles in the game speak of the Wapitis’ plight in standing up to outsiders who wish to take their reservation land because of its purported deposits of oil. - ◆In the Epilogue, the player can encounter Native Americans, who are observing them from out of in-game bounds. They can be seen at the Mexican side of Manteca Falls or near the waterfall at the Lower Montana River.

- ◆Wapiti is also the name of an unincorporated community in Park County, Wyoming. The Grizzlies East region shares similarities with northwestern Wyoming, where Park County is located.
- ◆The Wapiti seem to have knowledge of the Murfree Brood, as Charles Smith mentions some of the Natives talking about them.
