Les Indiens Wapiti sont un peuple autochtone originaire de The Heartlands, à New Hanover, dirigé par le chef Rains Fall. Des années de guerre contre les colons et le gouvernement des États-Unis les ont affaiblis, et plusieurs traités successifs leur font défaut avant qu'un troisième ne les confine dans la Wapiti Indian Reservation, à Ambarino. Le colonel Favours et Leviticus Cornwall cherchent à nouveau à les déplacer afin que Cornwall puisse exploiter le pétrole situé sous la réserve. Le gang Van der Linde aperçoit pour la première fois des Wapiti en quittant Colter, lorsque Charles Smith assure Arthur Morgan et Hosea Matthews qu'ils ne leur veulent aucun mal.
À Saint Denis, Evelyn Miller présente Arthur à Rains Fall et à son fils, Eagle Flies. Eagle Flies engage Arthur pour prendre des documents à la raffinerie de Cornwall, qui pourraient révéler le plan dirigé contre son peuple. Arthur s'infiltre dans la raffinerie, et Eagle Flies provoque une explosion pour l'aider à échapper aux gardes. Arthur lui remet les documents et reçoit un paiement. Après l'arrivée du gang à Beaver Hollow, Eagle Flies et Paytah se joignent à Dutch van der Linde, Arthur et Charles pour récupérer des chevaux volés par des soldats près de Fort Wallace.
Arthur chevauche plus tard avec Rains Fall, qui lui montre un site sacré profané et lui demande de récupérer les objets qui y ont été volés sans verser de sang. Arthur aide également le capitaine Monroe à récupérer des vaccins refusés aux Wapiti malades. Dutch persuade Eagle Flies d'attaquer une patrouille de l'Armée, mais les soldats capturent Eagle Flies. Arthur et Charles le sauvent de Fort Wallace après que Favours a rejeté la tentative de paix de Rains Fall et entrepris d'arrêter Monroe. Eagle Flies conclut que l'Armée n'a laissé à son peuple d'autre choix que la guerre.
Eagle Flies mène des guerriers Wapiti jusqu'à la raffinerie de Cornwall, cherchant l'aide du gang pour la détruire. Rains Fall tente d'arrêter l'attaque, mais son fils poursuit avec Dutch, Arthur, Charles et les guerriers. Durant l'assaut, Eagle Flies est blessé par balle en sauvant Arthur. Arthur et Charles le conduisent auprès de Rains Fall à la réserve, où Eagle Flies meurt aux côtés de son père. À la fin de l'année 1899, les Wapiti restants fuient la réserve. Ils s'installent finalement au Canada, où Rains Fall demeure leur chef en 1907.

- ◆Wapiti Avenue in Blackwater is named after the tribe. This was common practice in the United States to name streets, cities, and even several states after the local Indian inhabitants, often despite a near-total wipeout of most local Indian populations.
- ◆Wapiti, also known as Elk, is one of the largest species of Deer and is endemic to the North American continent. The word "wapiti" (sometimes spelled "waapiti") is of Shawnee origin and literally translates to "white rump."
- ◆The fictional Wapiti tribe is not based on any single tribe but instead is a composite of Native American groups mostly from the Plains and Rocky Mountain regions, such as the Cheyenne, Blackfeet, Crow, Ute, Arapaho, and especially the Sioux given that the members of the tribe speak the Lakota language.
- ◆Conversations and newspaper articles in the game speak of the Wapitis’ plight in standing up to outsiders who wish to take their reservation land because of its purported deposits of oil. - ◆In the Epilogue, the player can encounter Native Americans, who are observing them from out of in-game bounds. They can be seen at the Mexican side of Manteca Falls or near the waterfall at the Lower Montana River.
- ◆Native Americans may spawn acting as lawmen if the player becomes or is "Wanted" near the Wapiti Reservation at any point before it is abandoned.
- ◆Wapiti is also the name of an unincorporated community in Park County, Wyoming. The Grizzlies East region shares similarities with northwestern Wyoming, where Park County is located.
- ◆The Wapiti seem to have knowledge of the Murfree Brood, as Charles Smith mentions some of the Natives talking about them.
