I Wapiti Indians sono un popolo indigeno di The Heartlands, New Hanover, guidato dal Chief Rains Fall. Anni di guerra con i coloni e il governo degli Stati Uniti li hanno indeboliti, e una serie di trattati li tradisce prima che un terzo li confini nella Wapiti Indian Reservation in Ambarino. Colonel Favours e Leviticus Cornwall cercano di scacciarli di nuovo, affinché Cornwall possa sfruttare il petrolio sotto la riserva. La Van der Linde gang vede per la prima volta dei Wapiti mentre lascia Colter, quando Charles Smith assicura ad Arthur Morgan e Hosea Matthews che non intendono fare loro del male.
A Saint Denis, Evelyn Miller presenta Arthur a Rains Fall e a suo figlio, Eagle Flies. Eagle Flies incarica Arthur di sottrarre documenti dalla raffineria di Cornwall, che potrebbero smascherare il piano contro il suo popolo. Arthur si infiltra nella raffineria, mentre Eagle Flies provoca un'esplosione per aiutarlo a sfuggire alle guardie. Arthur gli consegna i documenti e riceve il pagamento. Dopo che la gang raggiunge Beaver Hollow, Eagle Flies e Paytah si uniscono a Dutch van der Linde, Arthur e Charles per recuperare cavalli rubati dai soldati nei pressi di Fort Wallace.
In seguito Arthur cavalca con Rains Fall, che gli mostra un luogo sacro profanato e gli chiede di recuperare gli oggetti rubati senza spargimenti di sangue. Arthur aiuta anche Captain Monroe a recuperare vaccini trattenuti ai Wapiti malati. Dutch convince Eagle Flies ad attaccare una pattuglia dell'esercito, ma i soldati catturano Eagle Flies. Arthur e Charles lo salvano da Fort Wallace dopo che Favours respinge il tentativo di pace di Rains Fall e decide di arrestare Monroe. Eagle Flies conclude che l'esercito non ha lasciato al suo popolo altra scelta che la guerra.
Eagle Flies guida i guerrieri Wapiti alla raffineria di Cornwall, cercando l'aiuto della gang per distruggerla. Rains Fall tenta di fermare l'attacco, ma suo figlio procede con Dutch, Arthur, Charles e i guerrieri. Durante l'assalto, Eagle Flies viene colpito mentre salva Arthur. Arthur e Charles lo portano da Rains Fall alla riserva, dove Eagle Flies muore accanto a suo padre. Entro la fine del 1899, i Wapiti rimasti fuggono dalla riserva. Alla fine si stabiliscono in Canada, dove Rains Fall rimane il loro capo nel 1907.

- ◆Wapiti Avenue in Blackwater is named after the tribe. This was common practice in the United States to name streets, cities, and even several states after the local Indian inhabitants, often despite a near-total wipeout of most local Indian populations.
- ◆Wapiti, also known as Elk, is one of the largest species of Deer and is endemic to the North American continent. The word "wapiti" (sometimes spelled "waapiti") is of Shawnee origin and literally translates to "white rump."
- ◆The fictional Wapiti tribe is not based on any single tribe but instead is a composite of Native American groups mostly from the Plains and Rocky Mountain regions, such as the Cheyenne, Blackfeet, Crow, Ute, Arapaho, and especially the Sioux given that the members of the tribe speak the Lakota language.
- ◆Conversations and newspaper articles in the game speak of the Wapitis’ plight in standing up to outsiders who wish to take their reservation land because of its purported deposits of oil. Many tribes, particularly those whom the U.S. government removed to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in the nineteenth century, faced such threats by the turn of the twentieth century as demand for natural resources became lucrative in an increasingly industrialized society.
- ◆The Wapiti tribe’s efforts to flee to Canada reflect the historical late-nineteenth-century attempts to do so by several actual tribes and bands, most famously the Nez Perce as led by Chief Joseph, as well as Lakota groups led by Sitting Bull.

- ◆In the Epilogue, the player can encounter Native Americans, who are observing them from out of in-game bounds. They can be seen at the Mexican side of Manteca Falls or near the waterfall at the Lower Montana River.
- ◆Native Americans may spawn acting as lawmen if the player becomes or is "Wanted" near the Wapiti Reservation at any point before it is abandoned.
- ◆Wapiti is also the name of an unincorporated community in Park County, Wyoming. The Grizzlies East region shares similarities with northwestern Wyoming, where Park County is located.
- ◆The Wapiti seem to have knowledge of the Murfree Brood, as Charles Smith mentions some of the Natives talking about them.
