Civilization, at Any Price

John Marston approaches the governor's residence in Escalera, where Captain Vincente de Santa stops him at gunpoint. De Santa reveals that the threat is a joke, then takes John inside for food and drink. While a young servant attends to him, the captain discusses Mexico's rebellion on the journey to Chuparosa. He says Abraham Reyes leads outlaws in the hills, among them men like Bill Williamson and Javier Escuella, and asks John to join an attempt to catch Reyes.

At Chuparosa, John rides beside De Santa as a train leaves the station for Casa Madrugada. Rebels assault it from horseback and from positions along the railroad. John keeps pace with the engine and shoots back as attacks come from both sides of the line, including an ambush after the train passes through a tunnel. The train reaches Casa Madrugada with its escort intact, and John meets De Santa there for the night.

Two rebels seize the train after it leaves Casa Madrugada. De Santa sends John after it before it can reach Butter Bridge. John chases the hijacked train along the tracks, killing the rebels firing from its cars and the driver in the engine. He rides alongside the locomotive, jumps aboard and brings it to a stop just before the destroyed Butter Bridge.
