Player notes
In 1898, Joe is an outlaw operating from a cabin at Osman Grove in Roanoke Ridge. When the Red Dead Online protagonist enters without warning, Joe covers them with a gun before deciding they have come looking for work. He asks whether they know Micah Bell, Cleet or Samson Finch, recounts killing a man he scarcely knew, and hires the protagonist to deal with a rival and his associates. Joe later offers further killings, thefts and coach robberies from the cabin. He also joins Guido Martelli's criminal network and provides work during Blood Money.
In 1899, Micah brings Joe and Cleet into the Van der Linde gang's robbery of a US Army train. Joe has little part in the robbery itself, but remains with Micah as Arthur Morgan confronts him at Beaver Hollow over his betrayal of the gang. Joe takes Micah's side when Arthur and John Marston face the men gathered against them. The Pinkertons attack the camp before either side fires, forcing everyone to scatter. Joe rides with Dutch, Micah and Cleet as they pursue Arthur and John, who escape through the woods.
After the Van der Linde gang breaks apart, Joe and Cleet stay with Micah and form part of his new gang. In 1907, John, Sadie Adler and Charles Smith climb Mount Hagen after learning Micah is there. Joe and two other gang members confront John on the mountain path. John kills Joe and the two men in the ensuing gunfight, then continues toward Micah.
Trivia
- โJoe has a tattoo on his chest that reads "tout me fait rire", a French phrase which translates to "Everything makes me laugh". Cleet has a tattoo in the same area, although it is partially obscured by his neckerchief.
- โIf Joe is antagonized enough in camp, he will shove Arthur, just like Dutch, Micah and Cleet.
- โJoe never speaks during a cutscene in the single player campaign; he shares this distinction with Cleet. While Cleet does speak several times during "Our Best Selves" and "American Venom", Joe only has a few lines during his final appearance. One of them can be heard saying "Yup" during the opening cutscene of "Red Dead Redemption", although neither man's mouth can be seen moving. Both can also be interacted with around camp, between the missions "My Last Boy" and "Our Best Selves," although they never move past the table near Dutch's tent. They only sit at the table, lay on their nearby bedrolls or occasionally go to the mouth of the cave. During these interactions, Arthur notes that he doesn't talk much.
- โHowever, he does speak during his stranger activity in Red Dead Online. This interaction sees him speaking much more, often repeating himself. Also, he, Sadie Adler, Josiah Trelawny and Sean MacGuire are the only members to appear in the game, although Joe and Sadie are the only two to have not been involved with the gang at the time, having become members a year after the events of Red Dead Online.
- โAlthough Joe is affiliated with Guido Martelli, he expresses distain for Italians to the Red Dead Online protagonist.
- โJoe's facial features seem to have been based on a real-life person that appeared in the book titled "Face", which is a collection of portraits taken by photographer, Bruce Gilden, who is best known for his candid close-up photographs of people.
