Rains Fall, chief of the Wapiti Indians, watches the Van der Linde gang leave the mountains with Eagle Flies and Paytah. He has fought in his youth, but years of loss and broken treaties have made him seek peace. At Mayor Henri Lemieux's Saint Denis party, he and Eagle Flies appeal for help against the Army's plan to remove the Wapiti from their reservation. After speaking with Evelyn Miller, Rains Fall asks Arthur Morgan to take incriminating papers from Cornwall.
Arthur later visits Wapiti, where Rains Fall reproves him for joining Eagle Flies's raid, then learns of Arthur's illness and offers him sympathy. On a ride, he gathers herbs for Arthur and finds an Army patrol has destroyed a sacred site. He asks Arthur to recover a chanupa without bloodshed. Arthur returns it, and Rains Fall gives him an owl trinket if no one is harmed. He then brings Arthur and Charles Smith to Colonel Favours's truce meeting, which ends with Captain Monroe's arrest and a firefight.
When Eagle Flies is taken at Fort Wallace, Rains Fall opposes a rescue, fearing further war, but Arthur and Charles free him. He later rides to Beaver Hollow to beg his people not to attack the Army's oil fields. They go to war anyway, and Arthur and Charles bring the mortally wounded Eagle Flies back to his father. In 1907, John Marston meets Rains Fall at Annesburg. The chief says the Wapiti fled to Canada, then boards a train to return there after mourning his son.
Trivia
- โAspects of Rains Fall appear to be based on Native American leaders such as Sitting Bull and Red Cloud.
- โRains Fall appears to be somewhat based off Red Cloud, a real-life Oglala Lakota tribal chief who was a prominent Native American leader in the 19th century. Red Cloud fought against the United States Army but similarly adapted a pacifist approach later in his life while leading his tribe to transition from inhabiting their ancestral lands to settling onto reservations.
- โThere are also similarities between Rains Fall and Sitting Bull; after the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the natives led by Sitting Bull was forced to relocate to Canada.
- โDuring the occasional instances in which Rains Fall departs from English to speak in a Native American language, the in-game caption reveals that the actual language he is using is Lakota.
- โIn the credits cutscene, Rains Fall's appearance has noticeably aged, however when John meets him at the train station, his appearance appears to be the same as how he was eight years prior.
- โMeeting Rains Fall in the epilogue results in a sizable boost in honor.
