Arthur encuentra a Sampson Black y Wendell White, dos presos fugados que siguen encadenados entre sí, discutiendo en el bosque a las afueras de Rhodes. Dicen que sus carteles de búsqueda están repartidos por el pueblo y le piden que los quite. Arthur entra en Rhodes y arranca avisos de la estación de tren, la oficina del sheriff, varios postes y de un cazarrecompensas que se ha quedado con uno. Después vuelve al campamento de los fugitivos con los cinco carteles.
Arthur puede quemar los carteles y dejar libres a Black y White, o capturar a la pareja y llevarla ante el sheriff de Rhodes. Si los deja marchar, vuelve a encontrarlos acampados sobre Dewberry Creek, cerca de Old Greenbank Mill. Han cambiado los uniformes de prisión por ropa civil vieja, pero unas setas silvestres los han dejado enfermos y retorcidos de dolor. Black y White le piden a Arthur un remedio de salud.
Cuando Arthur les da la medicina, ambos se recuperan. Les dice que separarse haría más difícil que la ley los localizara, aunque ninguno desea dejar al otro. Tiempo después, Arthur los encuentra de nuevo en Stilt Shack, en Big Valley. Black y White visten mejor y se han instalado cómodamente en la cabaña apartada, aunque siguen discutiendo sobre su seguridad e insisten en que nadie pasa por esa zona. Arthur los deja allí.
Curiosidades
- ◆Mr. White and Mr. Black's predicament is very similar to the premise of the 1958 film The Defiant Ones, which features two escapees chained together, one black and one white, who must surpass racist prejudices about each other in order to survive.
- ◆An argument can be heard in Rhodes between two people discussing whether or not they are innocent during the first phase of the mission. One insists that the criminals' alleged victims died of natural causes or were killed in self-defense, and that the judge presiding over their trial was bribed to fix the verdict against them.
- ◆The player can ask Alden Carruthers whether or not he thinks they are innocent.
- ◆Regardless of whether Arthur turns the pair in for their bounties or helps them, John can later repeat the encounter in Rhodes. This likely is either an oversight or they attempted escape again and ended up back in Rhodes in 1907.
- ◆Between part III and IV, if the player doesn't give the requested health cure right away and waits for too long, both Mr. White and Mr. Black will be found dead right where they were laying next to their tent, which ends this stranger mission prematurely.
