The Ties That Bind Us

Arthur finds Sampson Black and Wendell White, two escaped convicts still chained together, arguing in the woods outside Rhodes. They say their wanted posters are spread around town and ask him to take them down. Arthur goes into Rhodes and removes posters from the train station, the sheriff's office, street posts and a bounty hunter who has taken one for himself. He returns to the fugitives' camp with all five notices.

Arthur can burn the posters and leave Black and White free, or seize the pair and deliver them to the Rhodes sheriff. If he lets them go, he later finds them camped above Dewberry Creek near Old Greenbank Mill. They have traded their prison clothes for worn civilian garments, but wild mushrooms have left them sick and doubled over. Black and White ask Arthur for a health cure.

After Arthur gives them medicine, the two men recover. He tells them that separating would make it harder for the law to find them, though neither is eager to abandon the other. Later, Arthur comes across them again at Stilt Shack in Big Valley. Black and White are better dressed and settled into the isolated shack, still disputing their safety while insisting that nobody comes through this part of the country. Arthur leaves them there.
