Player notes

The American Paint is a small Work Horse with Standard handling. Its robust frame and patterned coats suit its role as a ranch horse, while its temperament, intelligence and willingness to work make it easy to care for. It has strong stamina, average health and speed, and lower acceleration than its other attributes. Its handling offers moderate agility and reactivity, placing it among the more capable Work Horses rather than the fastest starters.

Overo and Tobiano American Paints appear in wild herds, including around Donner Falls in Ambarino and across New Austin. Tobiano horses also stand hitched at Chez Porter, and both coats can appear beneath lawmen. Splashed White American Paints occur only at NPC camps guarded by hostile characters. The Grey Overo is available to buy at Tumbleweed Stable. The breed appears in Overo, Tobiano, Splashed White and Grey Overo coats.

American Paints are used for ranch work, as lawmen's mounts and as horses in camps and the wilderness. Javier Escuella rides a Grey Overo named Boaz during 1899, and Boaz can be seen at the gang's camp. Eagle Flies rides an unnamed, unique American Paint mare with a palomino version of the Splashed White coat in "American Fathers II" and "A Rage Unleashed". If acquired, her appearance changes to that of a generic horse.

Trivia

  • โ—†The second trailer for the game showed Arthur riding a Bay Overo American Paint with a texture that doesn't appear anywhere in the final game, though the markings appear on the compendium image. Subsequently, the texture for this horse was completely removed from the files before release.
  • โ—†There also exists a black variation of this paint ridden by a lawman in the Official Gameplay Trailer.
  • โ—†In "Exit, Pursued by a Bruised Ego" the papers that Arthur receives for his new horse are for an American Paint, regardless of which horse he purchases. The document also depicts Arthur's original Bay Overo American Paint.
  • โ—†The Overo American Paint can be easily obtained through lawmen in Emerald Ranch who have a higher chance to spawn this coat more than any other lawmen from other regions.
  • โ—†Contrary to the Compendium, the regular Splashed White coat cannot be located in the wild, and is instead only found at NPC camps. There is no other way to obtain this horse without cheats or exploits.
  • โ—†Four Overo American Paints are seen being owned by the Gray family during "The Course of True Love III", but none are seen in their stables or otherwise outside of this mission.
  • โ—†The Gray Overo is a frame overo with four socks and a bald face undergoing the greying process. It is unclear what color the horse was originally, though it can be considered erroneous that the horse has not grayed out at all by the Epilogue.
  • โ—†The Overo is a frame overo palomino with four socks and a bald face, in addition to blue eyes and a mane and tail that has not been bleached by the sun.
  • โ—†The Splashed White is an overo with a black base color and blue eyes.
  • โ—†Eagle Flies' horse is identical to the Splashed White, albeit with a palomino base color and a white mane and tail that has not been bleached by the sun.
