Player notes

The American Standardbred is a medium Race-class horse breed in Red Dead Redemption 2. It is built as a race horse, with an agile frame and powerful legs. Its Race handling makes it quick and manoeuvrable, and it generally trades lower health and stamina for higher speed with moderate acceleration. Among race horses, it performs as a fast mount rather than a hardy one.

American Standardbreds occur in the wilderness as transitory horses. Buckskin and Black examples can be found north of Cumberland Forest in New Hanover, at the northeast of Big Valley in West Elizabeth, and around Mercer Station in New Austin. The breed appears in Black, Buckskin, Palomino Dapple and Silver Tail Buckskin coats. The Black coat has no markings.

Sean MacGuire rides a Silver Tail Buckskin American Standardbred named Ennis, which stays at the gang camp in 1899. During the epilogue, a horse resembling Ennis is sold at A. Aitken Livery & Stable in Tumbleweed. A rider on the Black mare Ariel can challenge the player to races during a recurring encounter, and Ariel can be taken after it. In Red Dead Online, Horley rides a unique Light Buckskin American Standardbred.

  • โ—†The Palomino Dapple can be obtained for free during a random encounter where the horse will either kick a man to death or run off, in which case the horse must be lassoed and stolen in order to be kept by the player.
  • โ—†The Black American Standardbred can be obtained from Pinkertons in southern West Elizabeth, as well as during "No, No, and Thrice No" being ridden by one of the Foreman Brothers.
  • โ—†The Black American Standardbred has no markings and is the only horse in the game to share an exact coat color and breed from Red Dead Redemption.
  • โ—†The Palomino Dapple has four socks and a star and stripe, in addition to a mane and tail that has not been bleached by the sun.
