Player notes

Arthur meets Dutch van der Linde and John Marston in a Saint Denis park opposite Angelo Bronte's mansion. As they walk to the gates, Arthur fears violence could put Jack in danger, but Dutch insists they must remain composed. Dutch seizes a guard and has him summon Bronte. Inside, Dutch presents himself and his companions as harmless country people, downplaying the gang's dispute with the Braithwaites. Bronte receives the performance warmly and agrees to discuss Jack's return.

Bronte asks for a service before he gives the boy back. Grave robbers have been operating in the cemetery, and Arthur and John agree to deal with them while Dutch remains at the mansion with Bronte. Riding through Saint Denis, Arthur remarks on John's restraint during the meeting. John admits he does not trust Bronte and regrets the kind of father he has been to Jack. Arthur says the Braithwaites sold Jack for money, and with that family gone, Bronte has little reason to keep him.

At the cemetery, Arthur and John search among the tombs for the thieves. A disturbance draws them to the grave robbers, who open fire. Arthur and John kill the men, then locate the stash they had hidden. Lawmen arrive before they can leave, forcing the pair to slip through the cemetery without drawing attention. They emerge beyond the graveyard and ride back to Bronte's mansion.

Dutch is waiting outside Bronte's home with Jack. John is relieved to find his son unharmed, while Jack speaks happily about his stay in the mansion and the things Bronte taught him. The group rides through Bayou Nwa to Shady Belle, where Abigail is overjoyed to see Jack again. Dutch tells Arthur that Bronte has invited them to a garden party at the Mayor's house. The gang gathers at camp to celebrate Jack's return.

Trivia

  • ◆This mission closely resembles the Chapter 8 mission from Max Payne 3 and the mission "Bury the Hatchet" in Grand Theft Auto V. In both cases, the missions take place in a cemetery, with a massive shootout occurring in all three scenarios. Additionally, all protagonists—Arthur Morgan, Max Payne, and Michael De Santa—possess a special ability that allows them to shoot in slow motion. In each instance, the protagonists are cornered while attempting to escape: Max manages to escape, Arthur is nearly caught by the police, and Michael is captured by Chinese gangsters.
  • ◆During the part of the mission where Arthur and John are searching for the grave robbers in the cemetery, an old woman in a black dress can be seen wandering around the graveyard. It is possible to hogtie and loot her, however she cannot be killed.
  • ◆Using any firearms or projectiles in the cemetery while searching for the grave robbers will result in mission failure with John saying "Goddamn it, Arthur! How are we gonna get Jack back now?".
  • ◆After killing the grave robbers, they can be looted for an unusually large amount of money, around $18-$22 per corpse.
  • ◆After dealing with the grave robbers, if the player jumps on top of one of the large graves and over the wall, the part where Arthur picks up the stash will be skipped. It will also prevent the lawmen from spawning inside the cemetery.
  • ◆This mission has one of the most common exploits used by players to explore New Austin before the epilogue, both during and after the mission completion . However, exploring New Austin during the mission replay is only possible on version 1.0.0.
  • ◆Blackwater seems to be devoid of lawmen, but it is also recommended to use caution, as policemen still spawn despite the absence of Pinkertons, and alerting them shall incur mission failure and also loss of all progress until there. As long as the player doesn't alert the law in any way, they are free to explore the city and greet the locals.
  • ◆In New Austin, the saloons of Armadillo and Tumbleweed are open, but the player cannot drink or eat anything. The gunsmith, the general shop and the butcher, however, can be used as normal.
  • ◆Aside from lawmen and most non-legendary animals, almost no other character will spawn around, the weather will be always foggy and it will always be nighttime. You will not be able to set up camp to advance time or clear the fog during the mission.
  • ◆The player can inspect Points of Interest, catch Legendary Fish, tame the Tiger Striped Bay Mustang, collect Otis Miller's Revolver, and acquire both the Crow Beak and Turtle Shell Trinkets.
  • ◆Legendary animals, aggressive predators (gators, bears, wolves, cougars and panthers) and snakes will not spawn during the mission. Also, there will be no plants and no dinosaur bones.
  • ◆However, if the player goes to Sisika Penitentiary the guards will still be present, preventing them from exploring the island.
  • ◆During the mission, all shops in Saint Denis will be closed but the player can still enter them. However, they will only be able to converse with the shopkeepers as the shop services will be unavailable.
  • ◆This is an alternative way to obtain the horses from the stable for free.
  • ◆Jack mentions the Italian word "pantafòla", a kind of slipper, as one of the things he learnt. However, the actual word in Italian is "pantòfola", with Jack mispronouncing it, most likely due to his young age. He also says the same thing for the word "cavallo" (horse), but mispronounces it as the Spanish "ca-va-yo" rather than the Italian "ca-val-lo".
  • ◆The song that Javier sings at Jack's return party is Cielito Lindo, a popular traditional song of Mexico written in 1882 by Quirino Mendoza y Cortés, which became a well known theme song for Mexicans in recent decades.
  • ◆It is impossible to save the player's progress until after the party is over, unless Arthur goes to sleep or leaves the area.
  • ◆After Arthur arrives at the cemetery, he will automatically be equipped (on console) with a Lancaster Repeater and a Bolt Action Rifle.
  • ◆This is the only mission in the game that allows saving the game after activating cheats. Once cheats are activated, the player must have autosave turned "on" before initiating the mission and the game will save once the final cutscene plays out. Then the player must load the autosave and skip Jack's party by going to Arthur's room and using the "sleep" option to advance time. Once Arthur wakes up, starting a Stranger Side mission or inspecting Mary's letter will allow them to save as normal.
  • ◆Oddly, the end cutscene of this mission cannot be skipped.
