Player notes

At Colter, Dutch van der Linde gathers Arthur Morgan and the gang for a robbery on Leviticus Cornwall's private train. They need money, and the plans and dynamite taken from the O'Driscolls give them an opening. Hosea Matthews argues that Cornwall is too powerful a target and urges Dutch to leave while the weather improves, but Dutch rejects the warning. The gang rides through Grizzlies West in Ambarino toward the railway.

Bill Williamson places the explosives beside the track, with Arthur helping to connect the wire and detonator. The charge fails to stop Cornwall's train. The gang gives chase on horseback instead. Arthur and Lenny Summers leap onto the moving train, while Javier Escuella misses his jump and is injured. Arthur pulls Lenny back aboard when he nearly falls, then the pair fight their way along the cars toward the locomotive.

Arthur reaches the engine, overcomes the engineer and brings the train to a halt at Granite Pass. He and Lenny face the guards until the rest of the gang arrives. Dutch tries to talk the employees out of the locked private car, but they refuse. Bill's dynamite opens the door, and Arthur, Lenny and Micah Bell search inside for Cornwall's bonds. Once Arthur brings out the loot, Dutch leaves the passengers' fate to him.

Trivia

  • โ—†At the beginning of the mission, when Dutch talks of robbing Cornwall's train whether by lethal or non-lethal means, Hosea tries reasoning with him, saying, "I just don't want any more folks to die, Dutch," a line Arthur later remembers on his final ride in the "Red Dead Redemption" mission if his Honor is high.
  • โ—†The dynamite bundle will explode when shot, though Bill does not try this method to stop the train.
  • โ—†As the gang rides to the train tracks, a hideout can be seen in the distance.
  • โ—†This job is included under the "Gang Savings" section of Arthur's journal twice. The first time it has an X next to it, which is usually reserved for jobs that resulted in no payment. It is later added as a separate entry when Hosea has cashed in the bonds.
  • โ—†The scene where Dutch talks with the men within the train car is strikingly similar to a scene from the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, where Butch Cassidy attempts to persuade the man within a train car holding cash, but fails like Dutch. A further comparison can be drawn when the banker who owns the train company sends a posse after the Wild Bunch, similar to Leviticus Cornwall sending the Pinkertons after the Van der Linde gang.
  • โ—†Another potential film reference may be found in the train driver using his coal shovel to hit either Arthur or Lenny. In the silent film The Great Train Robbery (1903), a train driver similarly attempts to use his coal shovel to defend himself against a robber as he climbs the locomotive, but is overwhelmed by him.
  • โ—†The clerk at the Valentine train station may mention this robbery.
  • โ—†Even if the train stops at a different location, the cutscene will always show it stopping at Granite Pass, southwest of Window Rock. Furthermore, while Arthur can throw the train conductor off of the bridge, the train will always be shown as stopping right before it.
  • โ—†If Arthur has his Sawed-Off Shotgun holstered, it will be replaced with the Cattleman revolver after stopping the train.
  • โ—†When the gang fire on the train car, Micah can be seen using a Carbine Repeater. This is a very rare opportunity to see him with a longarm in the whole game.
  • โ—†Also, both Charles and Bill can be seen using Double-Barreled Shotguns. Even though this shotgun can only hold two rounds, neither of them stop to reload and continue to fire more than two rounds. This is possibly an oversight.
  • โ—†Even though the player is required to quickly stop the train, it may be impossible to fail the mission by not doing so as Lenny will continue onwards if the player takes too long.
  • โ—†After blowing the train doors, Dutch can be heard having a conversation with the train employees about their employer but this is very difficult to hear.
  • โ—†This mission will automatically continue into the final mission of Chapter 1, Eastward Bound.
  • โ—†If the player neglects to grab Lenny to pull him up, he will eventually climb back up himself and sarcastically thank Arthur, which will result in an honor loss.
  • โ—†If Lenny is ahead of Arthur, he will get ambushed by the train conductor and Arthur will have to save him instead.
  • โ—†If Arthur neglects to deal with the train guards, either by killing them or forcing them back onto the train, they will run away. This will have no effect on the story or mission either way.
