About this weapon
Dynamite is a Projectile weapon in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online. It is an explosive made for mining and construction, carried in sticks and used as a thrown charge or placed on an object before detonation. A player can carry up to eight sticks at once. It cannot be customized. Its blast is powerful enough to destroy most opponents caught close to it, and it can also damage or destroy objects.
After "Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall?" in Chapter 1, Dynamite is sold by every Fence for $1. Certain missions also provide it. In Red Dead Online, the Fence makes it available after "Honor Among Horse Thieves". Gunsmiths do not sell Dynamite, leaving Fences as its regular source outside mission supplies.
Dynamite can clear groups of enemies and destroy targets such as mines, trains and safes. It may be thrown after being lit, or set down and ignited before its user retreats from the blast. It can also kill fish in the water, although ordinary fish caught this way are of poor quality and cost a small amount of Honor in the story mode. Legendary Animals and Legendary Fish do not lose quality from Dynamite.
Trivia
- โLike the fire bottle, it can be used to kill certain NPCs who are normally unable to be targeted by the player. Despite this, some characters including Thomas Downes and children are completely immune to it as of the most recent patch.
- โIt can also be used to craft dynamite arrows, which will explode upon impact.
- โShooting dynamite will cause it to explode. This also applies to the crates of dynamite found around the map and in missions.
- โBlowing up a train's engine will render it completely inoperable.
- โOutside of missions, the usage of dynamite tends to be rather unrealistic as it does not properly damage buildings and many objects, and successfully throwing dynamite in particular would be extremely difficult to pull off. Despite this, NPCs do not actually use dynamite outside of scripted scenarios, with the mission "Urban Pleasures" and the Online mission "Come Hell, Come High Water" being the only two instances where it is used as a weapon. The latter mission appears to be a reference to "We Shall Be Together in Paradise", which is the only mission in Red Dead Redemption where dynamite is used as a weapon by NPCs.
