At Ridgewood Farm, Nigel West Dickens asks John Marston to enter a wagon race on his behalf. He defends Seth Briars' unsettling conduct by comparing him to figures respected in ancient Egypt, but John has little patience for the argument. Nigel needs money and believes John can win it for him. John agrees, takes a seat beside the salesman, and rides with him toward Gaptooth Breach.
At Gaptooth Breach, Nigel enters his wagon against several other drivers. John takes control of the team when the race begins, steering the wagon along the marked course through the desert while keeping ahead of the other carts. The race carries them across the rough country around the mine, with Nigel relying on John to bring his scheme in ahead of the competition.
John wins the race and secures Nigel's wager. With the other racers behind them, he drives Nigel's wagon away from Gaptooth Breach toward Benedict Point. During the ride, Nigel continues pressing John to help his various enterprises, while John remains focused on finding the men connected to Bill Williamson. They arrive at Benedict Point with Nigel still in need of John Marston's services.

Trivia
- โInterestingly, apart from the three racing missions given to you during the story ("Obstacles in Our Path"; "Liars, Cheats and Other Proud Americans"; "The Sport of Kings, and Liars"), the opportunity to race never presents itself again in single player. However, racing is available in the Grand Prix multiplayer game mode as part of the Liars and Cheats DLC.
- โSometimes, there is a wagon with no one driving it. It will still race and count for one of the racers, there just won't be a driver.
- โAt the start of the mission, Nigel West Dickens tries to justify Seth's behaviour mentioning that he would have been respected in Ancient Egypt: Seth was close to the name of the Egyptian god associated with disorder and deserts.
- โDuring the end ride of this mission, John will mention threats such as "Falling rocks" and "Homicidal maniacs" even though none of these appear, it is likely that these threats were intended to be in the mission but were scrapped or forgotten about.
- โIf the player manages to hitch their horse at the hitching post next to the mission marker, the opening cutscene of the mission will be skipped entirely, likely due to a glitch.
- โWhile the loading screen for the mission appears as normal, the game will quickly resume with Marston getting off his horse to hitch it, though the loading screen will resume immediately afterwards. Once the loading screen finishes for the second time, the player is instructed to ride shotgun with West Dickens without the opening cutscene playing prior to this.
